Headline: EU ban shows govt must push through FCV bill
The Government must hurry up and pass the Foreign Charter Vessels bill to prevent a potential EU ban on fish caught by South Korean vessels, says Labour’s Primary Industries spokesperson Damien O’Connor.
“The EU is considering making South Korea an illegal fishing nation. South Korean vessels make up the majority of the foreign charter vessels used to fish Maori quota.
“A ban on those vessels will hit the take for New Zealand companies and see a loss of value. The Foreign Charter Vessels Bill isn’t perfect but will solve some of these issues, yet it is languishing on Parliament’s order paper.
“The Government must pass this bill as soon as possible so that any ban can be pre-empted in New Zealand waters,” says Damien O’Connor.
