I’m sorry – what?

WikiLeaks: US may have spied on ordinary Kiwis
More WikiLeaks documents suggest the United States may have been spying on ordinary New Zealand citizens for the last few years.

That’s because the rules around the Five Eyes intelligence sharing network, which includes New Zealand, were changed in 2007 to allow such monitoring of emails and phone calls.

A top-secret draft memo reveals America’s National Security Agency (NSA) proposed it spy on citizens from the Five Eyes countries, even when those countries refused permission.

The memo, dating back to 2005, makes it clear that partner countries must not be informed about this surveillance, or even the procedure itself.

Britain eventually cut a deal with the US, allowing the spying.

So the reason given as to why we don’t worry about being spied upon is that as a member of the 5 Eyes of Mordor, there’s a ‘gentlemen’s’ agreement that member countries won’t spy on each other looks like it is worthless?

If the British rolled over and allowed the NSA to spy on British Citizens, did Helen Clark?

Now the GCSB can legally commit mass surveillance against NZ, this information can be relayed directly to the NSA.

If the protections of not being spied upon as a 5 eyes member are false, then we need to ask ourselves as a country whether being inside 5 eyes is anything other than a leash. It is time for us to regain some sovereignty here and ask for NZ to pull out of this 5 eyes arrangement and convert that station in Waihopai back to NZ interests while revoking the GCSB and TICS laws.

NZ needs to see 100% Mass Surveillance Free is as valuable to business as our 100% Pure as a brand.

  1. I am astonished you still ask that question, Helen did a fair few “betrayals” to the ordianry citicens, and for “national security”, she would have been EXPECTED to do so, in this matter, by our “friends and allies”!

There is NO doubts I have, but most prefer to live in “lala land”! Well the land of the “sheep” it used to be called, that is until BSE caught up with all, or some similar “syndrome” or illness perhaps, so it is everywhere, the ignorance, or blinkered view, that it cannot be, what we do not want to be.

Nah. Leave it anyway and dismantle the spooks. Whether the seppos are spying on us or not, we shouldn’t be helping them spy on anyone else.

  3. Won’t matter soon anyway, will it? We”ll all be saluting the Stars and Stripes as we become increasingly governed by Washington/Wall Street.

First we have the Pan Pacific Trade Agreement that the Gov’t can’t wait to sign. (Gee, thanks Tim for keeping us all in the dark about just what we are selling here). And now this latest attempted sell-out of NZ Sovereignty to US Imperialism: the Government Procurement Agreement.

    See:

“The CTU has warned the Government Procurement Agreement damages the interests of local firms. “

Jeez, poor old Uncle Sam must be in a REALLY bad way if they even have to control where exactly (in the USA of course) we elect to buy our pencils and rubbers from!

  4. Perhaps this explains Ms. Clarke’s lacklustre performance against the Natz at THAT general election – she already had her U.N. job lined up for past favours. We’ll never know but the “eyes” have it.
