Why NZ can’t seriously be given a seat on the UN Security Council

John Key spies with his 5 little eyes something beginning with American Hegemonic Supremacy

John Key’s latest attempt to sound tough on the UN to create the illusion of NZ as an honest broker sounds good, but seems pretty empty.

Under this Government, NZ has abandoned the independent foreign policy favored by Labour & the Greens for a far closer relationship with America.

The TPPA isn’t a trade deal, it’s a national security leash to fend off China’s economic influence, Key trying to sign us up to this and his commitment to the 5 eyes mass surveillance of domestic targets for immediate relay to the NSA are about as independent as a heroin addict from their dealer.

NZs on going involvement with Afghanistan, our acquiescence to every American foreign policy and our willingness to sell out our own citizens to the US are hardly examples of independence.

Take the recent decision to hand over NZers fingerprints and ultimately DNA to the US. When you consider the obscene tactics the NZ Police force have adopted to take DNA samples from young offenders, such transfer of information to the US seems the very antithesis of any sense of independence.

If Israel is the 51st state of America, this Government is trying to make NZ the 52nd.

  1. “Mr Key goes to the United Nations” was an unintentional bad version of Frank Capra’s film Mr Smith Goes To Washington (circa 1939)

  2. Exactly . That’s exactly it . And it’s been said that America is not a country . It’s a business .
But what can be done to slow down the USA / Corporate Deculturalization of NZ ? If America says ” I want that ” what can we do to prevent them from taking it . In this case , it’s not our oil , it’s our entire country .
The USA / Israel / Corporate killing machine has created chaos across the planet and has slaughtered hundreds of thousands , millions of innocent people to fuel up V8 SUV’s so what can tiny little NZ do to stop that terrible march ?
    Side with Al Qaeda ?
    Yeah …. ? Nah .
That’s the problem right there in fact . The Israeli Jews are sandwiched between the Russian and American Navies and Syria and Iran . Not exactly a picnic situation . So , where do the Israelis to go now ? They have shit , all they need is another nest .
It surprised me to learn that Israel is only the size of New York . It leads the way in software design and is the fourth or fifth largest arms manufacturer in the world . That’s where drones came from don’t cha know ? And it’s been argued in a report published by Al Jazeera ( Yeah , I know . ) that the Israelis deliberately inflame border skirmishes with their Arab neighbours to weapons test their latest toys . Toys financed by USA Corporations subcontracting to the USA military ?
That’s why I’d prefer to snuggle up to HRH QE2 . At least they’re human beings . QE 2 has her family . William , Harry , Kate and a baby and they have Class Darling .
What do the Americans have or have had ? Bush ? Clinton ? Obama ? Palin ? Nixon ? Kissenger ? And that other ugly bastard who looks like a bald bulldog after a stroke ?
NZ is too small to go it alone so we’d better get used to the idea that we need close friends and family around us right now and it’s time we choose . USA- Fuck Yeah ? Or The UK / Europe ? Ask yourself ? Which is classier ?
Would you say John Key has Class ? Who’s going to be the first politician to start preaching about how New Zealand should become a Republic ?

    • NZ is too small to go it alone…

      Wrong.

NZ is too small and too far away to be of any strategic importance but we are large enough to support ourselves so what we should be doing is declaring our complete and total neutrality. That would include dropping all FTAs.

      • This sounds extreme on the surface, but I actually agree with you. NZ can trivially feed itself – there is actually no reason for FTAs – most are indeed not even in NZ’s best interests. And as you say, you can’t proclaim “neutrality” when you have an FTA with that country.

As I recall, under the last Labour govt NZ participated in the 5 Eyes programme, sent combat troops to Afghanistan and indicated a willingness to join the TPPA. There’s actually very little foreign policy difference between Labour and National.

    • You may recall that, but I recall from reading Other People’s Wars that there was misinformation given to the Labour Government in some instances by the warmongers (and pro US) in the MoD, which played a part in that deployment.

Despite that, only the VERY naive would suggest that their party of preference is perfect in all respects.

You could argue the merit or otherwise of the topic at hand, otherwise discussions resemble a grown up version of “My Dad is bigger than your Dad”. Might mean that a consensus on some points is reached.

For instance, are you happy with the current US influence/coercion in terms of our military and foreign policy? And why?

Frankly, I’d prefer to think that Labour committed combat troops to Afghanistan out of considered principle than think that they did something that life-and-death serious because they were naive dupes who were suckered by interested parties.

I am. Martyn Bradbury claims the current government’s foreign policy is different from Labour’s, and cites the TPPA, 5 Eyes and participation in the Afghanistan war as examples. I’ve pointed out that those examples don’t support his claim.

For instance, are you happy with the current US influence/coercion in terms of our military and foreign policy?

I think Key is far too keen to do whatever the US government wants him to, and am far from happy with that. I expect other countries will notice that eagerness and defeat NZ’s attempt to get a seat on the Security Council. That said, in practice I wouldn’t imagine NZ Security Council votes being significantly different under either party.

    • Actually Mr Milt is right. Remember the Multi-lateral Agreement on Investments (MAI) or whatever it was called about 10 years back. The 5th Labour administration was pushing that barrow for all it was worth, even when a Kiwi lawyer employed by the interested forfeign corporations pleaded with the 5th Labour administration not to go ahead with it. The lost sovereignty was far too high a price to pay. In the end the thing fell over, but not because of the 5th Labour administration’s opposition to it.

John Key is espousing the present incarnation of the same bloody gig, under a brand new set of initials. In this, the 5th National adminstration is no worse than the 5th Labour adminstration. Neither gives or gave a floating fornication about New Zealand’s sovereignty, about the livelihoods, health and well-being of New Zealanders, except insofar as those New Zealanders were fat cat fat-cattists with heaps of sponduliks with which to profit from the wage enslavement of the rest of us, and reward the complaisant politicians.

I’ll tell you what. From an historical perspective, Rob Muldoon was certainly not my favorite PM this country has groaned under, but at least his concern for New Zealanders, though limited and not unqualified, was at least genuine. Since 1984, neither of the major parties in my view has displayed a shred of real concern for the people of this country.

Years ago, I was forced to conclude that if New Zealand’s democracy consisted of ‘government of the people, by the people, for the people’, New Zealand has a population of about 4000. I’ve had no reason to change my view.

  4. NZ’s application to join the security council is so embarrassing as the Govt and bureaucracy are so far up the US ass they’ve lost sight of the bigger picture. Should NZ get in, it will simply be another voice supporting the US and make us a target of angst by the USA’ enemies.
