Helpless animals are closer to be being protected from the cruel tests of the legal high industry after a Labour initiative was supported by Parliament today, Labour’s MP for Hutt South Trevor Mallard says.

“Parliament made a big mistake a few weeks ago when it approved animal testing for psychoactive substances. This is effectively state sponsored cruelty to animals.

“But it now has taken the first step towards putting it right by referring to a select committee a Labour Party amendment which would stop this happening.

“It is immoral for animals to suffer and die so people can get high. They should not be the victims of the greed of those behind the party pill and synthetic cannabis industry.

“Labour ran a short, sharp campaign to encourage the Government to accept our amendment to the Animal Welfare Amendment Bill and over 5000 people emailed Nathan Guy in less than 48 hours to express their support for our position.

“While this is a great initial result, the matter is now to be considered by the Primary Production Select Committee and I encourage everyone who cares about cruelty to animals to make a submission,” Trevor Mallard says.
