And so begins Birthday Week. This is the week in which my family sees 3 Birthdays (my Mum, my Dad and Myself) in 7 days. Happy Birthday Mum and Dad! We end this week stuffed with cake and feeling broke. It’s great. It’s very efficient celebrating. I love it. It’s also very conveniently timed. This year my parents are getting Film Festival tickets. This is the first full week of the New Zealand International Film Festival (how was that for a segue?!). The programme is a cracker this year. So many amazing films, with some of them sold out already and many more selling fast. Our top 30 picks are here. But is was a massive challenge to whittle it down to that. Get yourself a programme and make your picks.

The Greens are talking Affordable Housing, Affordable Power in Lower hut on Monday night. Holly Walker and Gareth Hughes will be holding a public meeting to share the Green Party’s plans to bring the cost of living down, through affordable housing and affordable power policies.

The Auckland Art Gallery is showcasing their latest exhibition California Design with one of their Open Late events. On Tuesday night, head along to the gallery in the evening for a spot of food & drink before listening to Benny Castles of WORLD talk about one of the objects in the exhibition. Later, there’ll be a performance from The Circling Sun. A great way of checking out what this exhibition has to offer. I’ll be there and will be reviewing the evening and the exhibition after as well. Excited.

There is a NEAT sounding school holidays activity happening at Auckland Museum in the evenings from Tuesday-Thursday. Fish and Ships is a Nautical Night at the Museum. The littlies dress up nautically, there will be music from the Royal New Zealand Navy Band and a party celebrating the battlecruiser HMS New Zealand’s travels around the world 100 years ago. There’s also a chance to check out Moana-Our Ocean (great exhibition) AND you might even see a Taniwha…

Wallace and Damian are FINALLY bringing Back Benches back to Auckland this week. It’s filming at Britomart Country Club. Get there from 5.30pm onwards and filming will start at 6.30. The panel is David Shearer, Russel Norman and Jami Lee Ross. Have a drink and watch some top notch live pub politics. Excellent.

There is a nation-wide day of protest happening on Saturday. The Stop the GCSB Bill community have protests organised in 7 centres around NZ. So if you’re in Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch or Dunedin head along and defend some really basic human rights which really actually shouldn’t need protecting…

Last but not least, if you haven’t checked it out yet, the Doing Our Bit Campaign is asking NZ to double our Refugee quota. Find out more here and join the Facebook page.
