Headline: Labour’s loss will be Christchurch’s gain
The Labour Leader David Shearer says Lianne Dalziel is an outstanding candidate for the Christchurch mayoralty, and Labour’s loss is the city’s gain.
The Christchurch East MP has today confirmed she will stand for the mayoralty of Christchurch at this year’s local body elections.
“Lianne Dalziel is passionate, hard-working and absolutely committed to Christchurch. As an electorate MP and Labour’s spokesperson on Earthquake Recovery she knows full well the challenges and opportunities facing Christchurch.
“Christchurch needs strong leadership. Lianne’s experience and understanding of both the local issues and of central government make her an ideal candidate for mayor.
“The Labour caucus will be sorry to see her go.
“Of course her decision will mean a by-election in Christchurch East and Labour will fight hard to again earn the confidence of the electorate.
“We take nothing for granted, and expect a tough campaign from the National Party and others. But the truth is that National has let down the people of Christchurch East, and Labour has a strong story to tell about how we will help rebuild a lively, sustainable city.
“No doubt there will be plenty of interest from people seeking the Labour nomination – but that is for another day. Today Labour acknowledges Lianne Dalziel’s years of service, and her service yet to come as she moves on to her next challenge,” says David Shearer.
