I am astounded by the sheep like mentality of my fellow citizens at times. The vast expansion of state surveillance is a major civil rights concern, yet for many National Party voters 11 little words seem to erase any concerns from their tiny little minds.

‘If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear’.

For a Nation that rose up on its hind legs and screamed ‘nanny state’ over the closing of a legal loophole to stop the courts defending parents who were assaulting their children, they lack of constraint demanded by National voters of this out of control hard right Government should shame them.

Here are some questions for the ‘If you have nothing to hide’ sports bar brigade.

Would you personally be happy for the New Zealand GCSB and SIS spooks to know:

Who you are dating or have dated?
Your medical history?
Your financial history?
That you are in AA?
That you have a driving conviction?
That you are having an affair?
Who all your friends and relations are?
Spy on them as your associates?
Your political beliefs?
Your religious beliefs?
Who you have had conflicts with?
That you have smoked cannabis?
That you belong to a union?
That you have an eating disorder?
That you are in debt?
That the spooks can legally find out anything and everything about you?
That they can track your movements at all times?
That they can pry into your private communications with friends?
That they can put surveillance devices in your home?
That they can put a surveillance device in your vehicle?
That they will have automatic access to your emails, texts and mail?
That they can surveill all your phone calls?
That they can arrest you for no reason?
That they can do all this whether you have done anything illegal or not?
That they will have virtually no oversight in these activities?
That the Prime Minister is the only person they are responsible to?

We deserve the leaders we get. If NZers are so intellectually weak and stupid to not demand restraint on the power of their Government and to demand their mainstream media hold those leaders to account, then we deserve the consequences of a far less free society.

  1. Spot on.

And to think my parents escaped from a country where the power of the State over-rode the freedom of people.

Perhaps that’s what New Zealanders need to wake up…

  2. Target the questions to the audience:
Sports Bar Brigade do you wan the GCSB to know about:

All those cash deals you do?
The undeclared winnings from personal betting?
The many personal items, meals, travel, entertainment you charge out as business expenses?
Why you close out your limited liability companies so frequently and why you need to have so many?
What you and your drunk mates do?
How you lay off employees after 89 days to avoid higher pay?

Now, come to think of it all of the above are either illegal, unethical or both. So yeah, let’s give the police to spy on you through the GCSB.

  3. I hate with passion “The innocent will have nothing to fear” which extinguishes the presupposition of innocence before we start. It is the innocent who will have everything to fear. (The guilty will have the wit to cover their traces.)
