How awful is One Direction?

  1. They are no worse than any other pop band aimed at pre-teens. I don’t just mean now, like, ever.

There’s always going to be a market for that sort of stuff as long as people patronise children with inferior product. So I don’t really blame One Direction, its the whole industry.

  2. If we are going to start slagging off musical taste – how about the music abuse that goes on where great songs from the 1960s and 1970s are played to death for the listening pleasure of older people who don’t have the creative energy to listen and appreciate any music that was recorded after they were in their mid-twenties.

    • I couldn’t agree more. I get sick of old dudes saying “there’s not good music around now” when what they actually mean is they stopped listening to music when they still had all their hair.

It appears also that listening to anything that’s not entirely guitar based is a bit like paying capital gains tax – the loudest baby-boomers don’t want a bar of it.

  3. I think it’s rather ignorant to rank creativity. Music can be preferable to some and not others for a variety of reasons. There’s no right or wrong.

Music from the 60’s and 70’s are the bulk of my favourites, even though it’s a bit before my time, that preference probably originated as a result of the people in my upbringing and life. Relationships, culture, subculture; probably greatly influence people’s preferences. These could affect someone from transitioning between one scene to another over time as people and music evolves. I suppose exposure and marketing have an impact, up until yesterday I never knew who Daft Punk was until hearing their TV ad. Liked what I heard as there are elements of classic disco/funk I’m familiar with in their new album.

I never listen to oldies stations on radio, I find their playlists very limited and it quickly becomes repetitive and boring. Many older people seem to get a kick out of it though.
