Family First are a Charity, the way the Ku Klux Klan are a philanthropic trust

Family First NZ faces deregistration
Family First NZ says it will be deregistered as a charity because of its views on gay marriage.

National director of Family First Bob McCoskrie said the group has received notification the Charities Commission intends to deregister the organisation.

He said the decision was highly politicised and showed groups that think differently to the politically correct view will be targeted.

I’m not really sure how on earth Family Fist – the fundamental Christian lobby group who want the right to legally bash their kids, is in any way shape or form a charity.

Let’s be clear, I don’t like a charity being excluded because of their political goals as that opens these charities up to all sorts of possible interference by a Government that doesn’t like those goals, so on those grounds I am skeptical of dumping a charity. The ability to educate the wider community and the quality of altruism is how we should judge these organizations when deciding if a group is a charity, and on this front, Family Fist is woeful.

What has Bob McCoskrie and his disciples actually brought to the community and what education have they achieved? A brief glance at their website shows a mess of weird posts on not being able to legally assault your children and lots of eye-rolling stuff on gay marriage.

I’m not sure a bunch of religious fanatics pushing ignorant opinions is the sort of thing Society needs anymore of.

I don’t mind Bob having the right to voice his warped views of the world based on the teachings of his invisible omnipotent flying wizard friend, but I just don’t see why the rest of society needs to cut him a deal on his costs via a charitable trust.

Alternately Bob can ask his invisible omnipotent flying wizard friend for the dosh to continue funding Family Fist.

For an organization so focused on using the word ‘family’ to exclude, there is little that is charitable about Family First. The promotion of ignorance is something that should be done in your own time with your own resources.

  1. Bob McCoskie has an attack of the Entitey Whiteys (Entitled white men crying ‘prejudice’ when literally everything doesn’t go their way – see also ‘Men’s Rights Activism’) if he thinks only groups that think like his will be targeted for deregistration – Greenpeace for one were struck off recently.

Basically, if you primary purpose is political advocacy, you are not a charity for the purposes of the Act. Family First’s primary purpose is political advocacy, therefore, they lost their charitable status. Pretty simple.
