I’m marching on Saturday 27th at the Aotearoa is not for Sale protest action for a number of reasons. My disgust at allowing those who have benefited most from tax cuts being subsidized to buy assets my mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, aunties, cousins, uncles and brothers have already paid for burns me with injustice but the main reason I am marching on Saturday is for my beautiful 3 year old daughter.

The promise of democracy is that we can look into the faces of our children and know they will get a better deal of it than we did. I refuse to look into her eyes and know she will get less than I have.

These assets are the economic sovereignty of our nation and selling them diminishes her future. I simply won’t be quiet about that.

  1. The television advertising campaign for the asset theft includes outrageous doublespeak, including statements that 51% of the company will remain in “Government” hands (cf the NZ public) and 49% will be made available to “New Zealanders” (i.e. the NZ public, omitting to mention availability to rest of world as well).

NAct’s arrogant propensity to treat us all as stupid is well illustrated.

  2. Well I was all set to buy some of our own assets, but it turns out it’s a shit investment. I am not a financial advisor (so take everything I say with a loads of scepticism), but even a cursory look at the Mighty River Power Share prospectus should immediately raise hairs in the back of your neck. First, try and find a utility with a price to earnings ratio (PE) of 40(!). Apple stock has a PE of just 9, and that is a Nasdaq tech company ffs. Now try and find a utility with a paltry 4% dividend yield. I can get that in the bank(!), and sleep a hell of a lot better at night than with my money tied up in stocks. These Might River Power share is on the face of it imho 2-3 times overvalued. Which gets me to my final point: why is the price of the shares not fixed? $2.35 to $2.80, that’s like a 20% spread, so you could get fleeced right from the get go because you have no way of knowing what the share will actually cost you. John is probably putting a large short interest down on it as we speak. This looks as dodgy as the Facebook float.

      • That what it looks like to me. I, for one, will be sitting on the sidelines. These stocks seem to be horrendously overvalued. I knew the Government was desperate for cash, but ripping off the very mum and dad investors that probably voted for John Key and his forked tongued cronies is pretty contemptuous even for them.

  3. Anyone going should take something to make a lot of noise with, for example, a whistle or one those annoying South African things. I was at a education rally a couple of days ago and realised some sort of thing to blow is a very handy tool at a protest march. You want to create as big a din as possible, which is much more positive than violence and has the same impact.

  4. We must not get side tracked by issues, Asset Sales, Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement, goverment spying on NZers, Right to Protest at Sea and how long before on Land? This is all about the loss of democracy.
I am organising “The Democracy Bus” leaving from the Stop Asset Sales March in Nelson to Hamner Springs to protest the National Party Regional Conference. Local business are helping out, bus company is doing it for cost, donations from different groups and parties but not all! Who you would think would/should want to support such action. So we are still a fair bit short of $$ which will once again have to come from those who can afford it least and have the least to gain.
We must protest every National party meeting & MP where ever & whenever we can, show National we will not be too busy, too tired, too poor, too worried about ourselves, too interested in whats on TV to make a stand for our country. We must not only do this for our children & future generations we must also do this for our forefathers who gave so much for us to have a democracy. LEST WE FORGET!!
Let future generations remember us as people who stood up and fought back as past generations have for thousands of years. Not as soft, selfish people who went quietly into serfdom & tyranny!
The price of democracy is eternal vigilance.

  5. “The Democracy Bus”
Facebook Events 27th April from Nelson to Hamner Springs.
    Protest National Party Regional Conference.
Dictator Key will be arriving on Sunday morning to give a speech.
We will be there with pot & pans, whistles & drums to unwelcome him.

  6. You do realise that it is precisely because we HAVEN’T paid for them yet that they are being sold right? We are bringing in cash because right now the debt we owe against them is costing us more than the assets are making.

That means there will be more money in the hands of the government to spend on stuff like education and health, rather than spending it all propping up our debt.

If you really want to give your kids a better deal then you should let the government choose not to waste your taxes paying for things that aren’t making enough money for them and reinvest it all in places that it will actually benefit.
