1.2 Billion in Mental Health Crisis as AI Guts Jobs

The global mental health crisis is no longer a warning flare. Nearly 1.2 billion people are now living with mental disorders while the planet burns, social media algorithms monetise despair and AI Tech Bros promise to gut whatever economic security remains.
Nearly 1.2 billion people worldwide are living with mental disorders. The number has been growing
Nearly 1.2 billion people worldwide had mental disorders in 2023, reflecting a 95.5% increase since 1990, a new study has found.
The largest increases were in anxiety and depression, which were also the most common disorders in 2023. In third place was a residual category of personality disorders not accompanied by other mental or substance use disorders.
The study, published Thursday in the journal The Lancet, also revealed how trends concerning 12 mental disorders differed by age, sex, location and sociodemographic factors among 204 countries and territories — suggesting “that we are entering an even more concerning phase of worsening mental disorder burden globally,” the authors wrote in the study.

UK’s ‘anxious generation’ of young people struggling to adapt to workplace
An “anxious generation” of young people is struggling to adapt to the outdated world of work, according to the government’s jobs adviser.
Alan Milburn, a former Labour health secretary, will say this week in a report that businesses must adapt by offering more flexibility and mental health support for young people to stave off an “economic catastrophe.”
In November last year, Milburn, who served in various government roles under Tony Blair, was asked by prime minister Keir Starmer to examine why almost 1 million 16- to 24-year-olds – about one in eight – were not in education, employment or training.
His interim report on this cohort, known as Neets, will be published next week. According to the Times, it will say that “a rising tide of mental ill-health, anxiety, depression [and] neurodiversity” is a central driver of high economic inactivity among young people.

…I’m very pessimistic about the looming climate catastrophe and don’t see real changes until it’s too late for most people.
Those who are broken will fall under the first sweeps of the scythe.
The enormity of climate change will force consequences that only compound the suffering.
And the obscenity is that none of this is inevitable. The billionaires building the algorithms, automating the work and torching the climate will buy their bunkers and private therapy while everyone else is told their despair is a personal weakness. It isn’t. It is the sane emotional response to a system that is knowingly breaking people.
