Labour Warns Willis Cuts Could Cost 10,000 Jobs

Labour says Nicola Willis is preparing to inflict a devastating wave of public sector cuts across New Zealand — sacrificing jobs, regional economies and frontline services in order to preserve National’s tax cut agenda.

Nicola Willis’ plan to slash public service jobs risks longer waits, weaker services, and less support for New Zealanders already struggling through a cost of living crisis.

“National said they’d fix the cost of living, and not only have they made it worse, they’re proposing to cut 10,000 jobs across the country, which would push up the unemployment rate,” Labour Public Services spokesperson Camilla Belich said.

“Nicola Willis is doing this because National needs the money to pay for their tax cuts and to make their books add up.

Fewer public servants means weaker public services

“You cannot slash thousands of jobs without affecting frontline services. Whether it’s processing support payments, protecting our borders, managing our health system, or responding to emergencies; fewer staff means slower and poorer outcomes for New Zealanders.”

The economic damage will spread far beyond Wellington

“The majority of our public servants work across our regions – as social workers, customs officers, corrections staff, health and disability workers, and air traffic controllers. These are thousands of incomes being removed from local economies. When workers lose jobs, they spend less at local businesses, cafes, shops, and service providers. That affects private sector jobs too.

“At a time when families are already under pressure, Nicola Willis is choosing cuts that will make it harder for people to get help when they need it.

“This is a political choice. National is choosing austerity over strong public services and secure jobs.

“New Zealanders deserve a Government focused on improving healthcare, keeping communities safe, and growing the economy – not one making cuts that will leave people worse off,” Camilla Belich said.
