  1. Agreed Steve
I am in China at present(we are visiting relatives). Ask a Chinese person – should China invade Taiwan? The answer is usually .” Why? Taiwan is forming close economic ties with us. Eventually they will join us of their own accord’.

As you say Steve – they are in no hurry( incidentially Ningxia at present is colder than a Polar Bear’s whatsit).

    1. Yes, people are unaware that China is by far Taiwan’s number 1 trading partner. Taiwan has long invested heavily in industry in mainland China. There is significant cross straits tourism and travel and inter-marriage between mainland Chinese and Taiwanese. Culturally the differences are the same as the difference between Australians and New Zealanders. So the relationship is more nuanced than the media would have you believe, and a lot of the noise is mere posturing.

Also the Chinese will pretend to be more threatening than they are – to encourage the West to waste their time and resources on an arms race that they can ill-afford. Sounds cliched – but read Sun Tzu.
