Her tireless fighting for the most vulnerable workers made her a civil rights champion the likes we haven’t seen in the position of Union President. Her authenticity her realness and her total lack of ego made her unique.
If it was Labour in power and they had screwed up so badly that Housing NZ was in danger of running out of cash, every editorial in the country would be demanding their resignation, National do it and it’s just business as usual.
As more and more NZers suddenly wake up to this appalling legislation and its ramifications – people are going to be outraged.
Outraged that they didn’t know this bloody thing was even happening.
Outraged at the full scale assault on our democracy that it represents.
And outraged that it’s been allowed to progress this far with bugger all scrutiny.
How dare she blame parents when the housing crisis erodes wages, how dare she blame parents when Kiwis are being forced to live in cars. How dare she blame parents when 41 000 are homeless. How dare she blame parents when there are 300 000 children living in poverty.
With my environmental activist hat on, I welcome this shift. With my blind pedestrian hat on, on the other hand, I greet this trend with apprehension.
If the National Party spent as much energy on redefining language to escape having to acknowledge the poverty their policies create on actually helping the poor, then they would have solved child poverty by now.
