The mere sight of the headscarf that identified them as Muslim was enough for this torrent of rage and fury to erupt at innocent people just going about their day. This wasn’t the deep South, this wasn’t the hinterlands of nowhere, it’s bloody Huntly, barely an hour outside of Auckland, our largest metropolitan and cosmopolitan city.
This is how you win elections. The working class, the poor and migrant communities who bear the brunt of societal crime want to have their genuine fears addressed and a well known cop like O’Connor gives them the sense that their fears are being represented.

The question is how much the LGBTQ community are prepared to be used by a Prime Minister who has built his political career on demonising them and denying them basic human rights. He voted against same sex marriage, civil unions, prostitution reform and attempted to force NZ only to accept a definition of heterosexual marriage. Add in the hate he has for women attempting to gain safe and legal abortion and Bill English is a hard right Christian with all the compassion of Donald Trump on a bad hair day.

Though they could not admit it in as many words, their loud and very public rebellion against the recruitment of Willie Jackson made it crystal clear that if the choice was between winning the election, or compromising their social liberal ideology, then they were willing to give up winning the election.
