  1. Sly-man is just spouting the universal Right – “you’ve/they’ve worked hard for the money – why should the govt steal it”. That is why the political Left need to take a leaf from the likes of Bernie, Jeremy Corbyn & AOC: “Is it moral for someone to have several houses, not even pay tax on their profit while families live in their cars”.

P.S. I’m a little dumb on property law but does NZ have negative gearing on housing? And if we do – could this be part of the problem?

    1. Yep. NZ currently has negative gearing on investment properties. This government has pledged to stop it after the 2019 Financial Year ends in April – much to the dismay of the NZ Property Investors Federation and its members.

  2. Yes Frank,

    I would be in favour of a ‘Capital Gains tax’ if it funds this option I propose for saving our planet from Climate change;

It would be more productive and environmentally sustainable for Government to offer better options for property owners to get these subsidies to make all properties more healthy.

*For better insulation like using wool underlay and wool carpeting.

    *Double glazing of windows.

*This would also stimulate more jobs.

*Also sheep farmer incomes would rise and assist them to cope with lowering ‘climate change emissions’.

*These improvements would effectively be helping to slow Climate change and will slow the rate of increasing dampness, rain and extreme weather event that cause more dampness and mould in homes.

“Good laid plans make for far better outcomes”

  3. Let’s see Simon Bridges campaign in 2020 for privileged property owners ro buy/sell baches tax free, while NZers are unable to afford a home. I dare him to do it.

It would be the death knell for his political career.

But he won’t. He’s too gutless.

  4. Simon’s words are disconnected from most Kiwi’s experiences, therefore he is (to quote from Shakespeare’s play Hamlet) “Hoist with his own petard”.

That is to say his own verbiage-bombs blow up in his face in an ironic reversal [poetic justice].

  5. Yep, another CGT article to add to the already unbelievable number already gone before. Not criticizing yours Frank, right on the money as usual. It’s just so bad when what seems like most of NZ hates the CGT , and the rest just don’t give a toss. We deserve what we get, as a whole I mean. Just too much apathy, not enough people can be bothered to suss the reasons for this, too hard, too dumb or whatever. Personally I get a kick out of all the negativity by the boomers and oldies that are SO vocal about this. Fuck them and their property speculation, we need to get behind the young ones and demand the oldies payback what they virtually inherited, worked hard -my arse.

    1. No criticism taken, Greenbus, there are elements to your despairing anger that ring true for me as well.

It remains to be seen what this coalition government can achieve and whether NZ First has the balls to do what is right and fair.

      Time will tell.
