The family of an Auckland father-of-two who died shortly after being taken into police custody earlier this month is calling for the mandatory use of police body cameras.
He was beaten so badly it split his head open.

It’s a difficult profession and risk is all around.
Training to be a Police Officer alongside lots of holiday time and counselling should be enough to keep them in control in the heat of the moment, but there are so many questions in this death that suggest those hand breaks that are supposed to pull a Police Officer back were not enough because the damage to Faasala Samu Matue’s body could only have happened from a sustained beating.
Now, clearly the chase and resistance to arrest required a level of physical policing to ensure the arrest, but the timeline is very confused, there aren’t body cameras (why the fuck not) and the claims he had a sword quickly turned out to be a police lie.
It seems that once Faasala Samu Matue badly bit the Police Officer, the rest of the Police Officers went into revenge mode and literally beat the living shit out of him and he died shortly afterwards.
A group of cops beating a man to death because they were angry at him biting one of them is just not the kind of justice any Kiwi should be proud of.
He sustained terrible injuries that could only come about from a sustained beating, I can not understand how they justified continuing to use violence once he stopped resisting.
This was a murder and this requires a truly independent review because a person who should not have died is dead.
These are NOT the safeguards we expect in place when Police arrest someone.

Does it make any difference that we know it was an iron bar. The driver of the car was not beaten as far as I know so if you do not attack police you are usually not harmed .
This is not to say their are no bad apples that abuse their power especially against those with no voice and are brown . Body cameras would protect both sides from false claims .

Police body cams may have captured K9 actually biting cop. When the Police play stacks on the mill and the K9 is released, anyone’s a target.
Watched a tik tok of the incident. It was for pmed from a fair distance. With that many cops and a Taser prong stuck in him it’s the cops own dumb fault they got their arm but. It was chaotic. Nothing to be proud of it was a tense moment. Bro was keen to go down swinging.
