Opportunity is calling on the Government to reverse its plans to build an LNG terminal in Taranaki.

“The evidence could not be clearer that tethering New Zealand’s future energy grid to a volatile global commodity like Liquid Natural Gas will not serve the interest of Kiwi communities and businesses” says party leader Qiulae Wong.
“European gas futures markets have just registered a 50% price increase in response to the conflict in the Middle East. This is not an energy system we want to design our future around – particularly given the geopolitical fallout of the crisis. We are calling on the Government to acknowledge the evidence and reverse its decision to build an LNG gas terminal in Taranaki.”
We share the Government’s goal for affordable, reliable energy and are prepared to work together to make that reality happen. We recently released our Abundant Energypolicy to that effect. It focusses on delivering clean, affordable energy through large scale investment in renewable generation, market reform and community & household level electrification. This is the future for energy in New Zealand – owned and generated by Kiwis for Kiwis, and resilient to price shocks and conflict half the world away’ says Wong.
