National backbenchers have threatened that the party will vote against a government bill at second reading, if changes are not made.
Fisheries Minister Shane Jones was last week forced to back down from what the Prime Minister called the “most egregious” part of the Fisheries Amendment Bill – scrapping minimum size limits for snapper – after an uproar from recreational fishers.

The undersized catch rule has been overturned, but there are many other deeply problematic elements of this Fisheries Amendment Bill.
It will allow more destructive bottom trawling.
The public will be limited from public consultation on fisheries decisions
And It blocks public access to the footage from cameras on boats.
Who is this law being written for?
So who exactly is this fisheries law protecting?
Because right now, it doesn’t look like the public. The protection of our fisheries or the interests of commercial fishing?
When it is so one-sided the way this is, even National Party MP’s balk at the greed!
The new laws go so far as to rule that anyone who publishes footage from cameras on boats that show environmental damage or breaches of rules will be fined $50,000. So not only is the public locked out of public consultation, we aren’t allowed to see the camera footage and anyone who publishes footage highlighting abuse by commercial fishing will be fined $50,000!
I’ve already decided that if this law passes and if I get sent footage off the cameras showing environmental damage or illegal catch, I most certainly am publishing it and I’ll see Matua Jones in Court!
This has become a free speech issue as much as it is an environmental issue now!
When are New Zealand voters going to acknowledge this corruption?
Can you imagine the outcry from NZ First rednecks if Left Wing Politicians were as nakedly venal towards corporations as Jones and Winston are?
That’s why the rise in NZ First should concern every Kiwi, this is Gumboot Fascism!

NZ First supporters don’t care because they have been so warped by social media hate algorithms that they sadistically want to hurt those who sneer at them more than hold their own to account.
The difference between an ACT supporter and NZ First supporter is that ACT will justify burning books if you own the book as a property right where as NZ First supporters will burn books out of the total glee of seeing librarians cry and art that makes them feel small burn.

It’s the “Winston First (2nd dibbs Shane) party”. Guaranteed global mining giants with questionable ethics from across the ditch will be eying strip mining Middle Earth with interest. Because we all know the the stellar reputation some of these companies have for benefiting the everyday denizens of a country.

If NZFirst is really NZFirst what are they doing to ensure ordinary kiwis are not being ripped off by mining and oil companies.
The Waihi Gold mines sells our gold for at least half a billion dollars but our cut is only 2%.
Its complete madness to charge low royalties when we know somewhere down the track we are likely going to have to clean up after the international mining company shoots through.
Russia charges oil companies tax+royalties of 40%.
Norway recoups 78% of the oil revenue generated by companies operating their oil & gas fields.
Gold mines in NZ ought to be subject to 50% royalty paid in gold to the treasury. That would put actual NZ first rather than NZFirst first. Instead we get mates rates royalties.
