More civil rights abuse, more police power and faster dog justice vs entrenching Maori political representation – the issues that matter
Four new bills have been drawn from the parliamentary ballot and they really do give you an insight into what National & Labour values actually stand for.
Paula Bennett has her firearms bill to stop any gang member from owning a gun and allowing Police more search and surveillance powers. Unfortunately the term ‘Gang’ has been expanded to mean 3 people with the same goal. Federated Farmers should be concerned.
National’s answer to the question ‘why does East Auckland have all the active culture of your average yogurt’, Jami-Lee Ross has had his oral drug test bill drawn out. With cannabis NZs most used illegal drug, the tests will give positive results despite the person not under the influence. This will result in an enormous jump in pointless prosecutions and a huge increase in the Police DNA bank.
And finally, National’s Ian McKelvie has had his dog law bill drawn so that Justices of the Peace can hear dog control cases. Gripping stuff.
So National’s draw of bills are to expand police powers while curtailing civil liberties and insuring your dog can get quicker justice than humans.
Compare that to Labour’s Rino Tirikatene’s Electoral Amendment Bill which seeks to ensure Māori will always have their electorate seat representation.
A Party who wants to remove your civil rights and give police more unchecked power and treat your dog with more judicial respect than humans vs a Party who wants to ensure indigenous people retain their electoral voice.

While people have the impression that we are heading towards a relaxation of cannabis laws, in actual fact things are getting more draconian

I think the phrase is “low information voters”. Nats fill that description nicely.
I was debating with a Nat voter on why The sharp increase in housing prices was bad for the economy and bad for the next generation for home ownership. His response, “not my problem, kids have it far too easy anyway”.
He’s a selfish asshole. But he’s related so i can’t tell him to fuck off.
Obviously if Auckland has a significant influence on the elections (around 30%) and the government has made it nearly 50% of people who were not born in NZ, you can’t exactly blame native born Kiwis for the problem when Labour and Greens seemingly support or be ok with National diluting as many Kiwi born people as possible in NZ and from countries that don’t have any sort of social welfare or even democracy and are still not doing enough to stop it.
Don’t be surprised when the Maori seats go. Big problem for future Maori.
Yes Martyn I read sop-pars article about Maori seats its the same old rhetoric from a tory hasbian. How he feels about Maori seats is how I feel about him and his one eyed bias journalism. If anyone is outdated its him. He needs to remember who create these seat and why they were created in the first place ( to control Maori and for those in power to keep control and not be outvoted by Maori) Also if these Maori seats are racist does that mean that racist people created them.
So that’s the values and priorities of the Nats, huh? It speaks volumes about the kind of nascent fascist types that they are. Fuck’em.
