One policy victory – five to go
Christchurch Mayoral candidate John Minto is delighted the council has decided not to sell its works company City Care.
“I’m standing as a Keep Our Assets Canterbury candidate and stopping the sale of City Care and other council assets is at the top of our policy platform”.
“This is a victory for the people of Christchurch who have always been overwhelmingly opposed to the sale of city assets”
The sale of city assets was sprung on the people of Christchurch after the last local body elections. It was it was never raise as a possibility before the election by the Mayor or any of the seven councillors who supported her initiative to sell assets.
We want a mayor and council elected who will pledge not to sell assets.
In the meantime we are chalking up one policy victory with five to go.
The other policies we will be fighting to win through the campaign are:
• Free and frequent public transport (as far out as Rangiora, Darfield and Rolleston) to be funded from the money saved by rescheduling the big roading projects
• The living wage paid as a minimum for all council work (funded by managing down the salaries of senior council managers)
• Swimmable rivers across Canterbury
• 1000 new council homes for rent and rent to buy over the next three years
• End the corporate stranglehold on the rebuild with stiff rate increases on undeveloped land in the CBD

Yes we can take 5 minutes to celebrate and then back to the fray.
1000 new council homes to rent is good but I would want to see the conditions before I could support any rent to buy. Some of us like good roads also so more detail on that suggestion is needed also. I would like to see public transport successful & if the inner city recovers its job supply there is more chance of public transport being a realistic option for workers but until that happens it will be a struggle filling the buses.
Quick thinking, if you think slower but deeper, you will realise that it is the car, not public transport, that is outdated. The advent of the electric car will make petrol driven cars obsolete within ten years, and robotically driven cars will destroy that market. The ‘need’ for major highways is over. John Minto has read the future well.
The direction is right.
The detail can be sorted.
John needs a fair go to do what is right for everybody, not sell assets for ransom.
