Claims and counter-claims on post-cyclone crime spike

Media on the ground in cyclone-hit communities found road-blocks and local people reporting looting, theft and being threatened with firearms – while police and politicians insisted there was no spike in crime and complained of disinformation in the media and online. Did the media sort the facts from the fiction and the emotion?

We said right from the start that this narrative of a mad max apocalypse looting spree was the usual if it bleeds it leads porn crime clickbait journalism we know and love in NZ!

What makes a natural disaster even sexier in the ratings? CRIME!

You woulda thunk after the claims of homeless tricking 5 star Covid lockdown rooms, supposed sex workers touring the North Island with hidden gang members in the trunk and now its gangs looting in a mad max apocalyptic end of days dystopian wasteland that apparently needs the military to be sent in under martial law according to silly gooses David Seymour and Winston Peters.

I’m not saying there weren’t bad buggers exploiting the misery, there was a gun presented to people at a checkpoint and that’s swful, but come on, the majority of this so called looting is desperation driven by people barely surviving in a catastrophic event.

The Police Commissioner was very clear that the social media frenzy of lootings allegations couldn’t be confirmed by any actual facts.

The crime that was spiking was domestic violence, but that’s a story that embarrasses NZers so it’s Gangs looting here we come!

National have pointed to their planned Police response unit, ‘Raptor Force’,  as evidence that National would sorted out these gang lootings, but how would a heavily armed paramilitary police force being dropped into a disaster zone to attack Gang members who may or may not be looting hep with the rebuild?

When the woke got spooked by the dumb lives matter parliament lawn protests last year, they demanded the police come in with tear gas and police dogs, there are unsubstantiated mass looting claims and ACT want the military sent in?

The ease with which the Right want to send the military in is deeply concerning especially when they have so little evidence to justify that.

Why does this matter?

It matters because ACT and NZ First were attempting to use the social media feeding frenzy on Mad Max end of times looting to try and declare Martial law!

Why didn’t ZB point out the person claiming mad max end of days looting also claimed the Government were hiding 1400 deaths?

Manipulating crime stories is one thing, pretending the Cyclone wasn’t serious is another.

ZB Hosts wanted to play culture war talking point games against the need to take the Cyclone seriously.

They wanted to sell the whole emergency as further proof of the weak Left and their sooky baby trigger levels.

The ZB Hosts played up to these cheap right wing talking points while the Cyclone devoured NZ.

They wanted to play up to this right wing myth that the Covid response was a huge over reaction and the Left keep wanting to use fear to bully others into curtailing their freedom!

ZB Hosts were more sexually excited about shitting on the weak panicking about a Cyclone than actually warning people about the worst Cyclone this century.

Cyclone Gabrielle was 960 Hectopascals, that was known before it hit, that knowledge alone tells a person that this was going to be a catastrophic storm if it struck us.

It was more important for ZN Hosts to get off on attacking the ‘fear culture’ of the Left than actually warning people.

Why does this matter?

For many caught in the firing line, all they could get was ZB and here was ZB telling them all that there was no danger!

They heard ZB on radio networks built by the public and which had been built with self reliance into them to handle a natural disaster.

So ZB was heard on public paid networks that were the only ones many people could get and ZB was telling those people no worries.

ZBs downplaying of the Cyclone is so problematic because they were broadcast on networks paid for by the Taxpayer and built with resilience.

If ZB want to downplay a natural disaster and their listeners believe them and drown, hey that’s a great day for everyone, but when ZB downplays a natural disaster on taxpayer funded networks then that’s criminal negligence.

Shouldn’t someone write a complaint to the Broadcasting Standards Authority?
