Labour rules out social housing rent increase
A Labour Government will not increase state house rents or increase the Accommodation Supplement to private landlords.
“Under Labour, social housing tenants won’t be hit with higher rents and taxpayers won’t be asked to write bigger cheques to private landlords,” Labour Leader Chris Hipkins said.
“Labour chooses lower costs for tenants, more affordable homes, and long-term solutions to the housing crisis.
“The Accommodation Supplement was created to help people with housing costs, but too often increases simply disappear into rising rents while taxpayers pick up the bill.
“Labour won’t fuel that cycle. We won’t increase state house rents, and we won’t increase payments to private landlords through a bigger Accommodation Supplement,” Chris Hipkins said.
“You don’t solve a housing crisis by making tenants pay more or by endlessly increasing subsidies to landlords,” Labour housing spokesperson Kieran McAnulty said.
“You solve it by building more homes, increasing supply and making sure every New Zealander can access a secure and affordable place to live.”
There has always been social housing in NZ which has worked well and was, until this CoC, a way to ensure the majority of folk, despite their enforced low pay rates, had the dignity and comfort of a roof over their heads as opposed to homelessness. I was horrified when I read earlier this week Luxon’s claim – he was unaware that Auckland lacks overnight emergency shelters for rough sleepers! What a lying moron! What in hell did he think happened after 5pm??? ‘A large bus collected them all, took them to a pre-designed place for a hot shower, evening meal and warm bed? Same bus returned them to the street next day, after brekkie of course, and about lunch-time the tea trolley bumped down the street, playing ‘Greensleeves’ complete with savouries, sandwiches and another hot drink.’ And ditto, ditto each day. How this fake PM / fake human-being can claim he didn’t know is ludicrous. And he has the gall to call himself a Christian! Another reason could be because he couldn’t give a rat’s ‘A’ about the homeless. If he could play a flute he would have done a Pied-Piper on them way before now. His day of reckoning is fast approaching!!! What the hell did we do to deserve him and his vile rabble? Thanks Labour for being humane.
