GUEST BLOG: The Lockdown With Bryan Bruce : Day 34 We Do Have Choices!
While some people couldn’t wait to get to McDonald’s and KFC on the move to Level 3 , others have discovered the joy of things like cooking, baking and gardening. We do have choices. We can change many things in our life or we can choose to remain the same.
Nine days ago I asked visitors to my page whether they planned to change anything in their life as a result of their experience during the lockdown and 81% of you said that you would be changing some aspect of your life.
Tonight I’m thinking about the big picture – where should we be headed as a people and a nation?
If we have proved anything through the Covid 19 shut down it’s that we are to able to unite in the common good better than many, if not most, other countries.
So my hope, as we enter the post pandemic economy, is that we will continue to CHOOSE goodness over nastiness.
CHOOSE fairness over inequity.
CHOOSE Selflessness over selfishness
CHOOSE hope over despair
In otherwords I want to leave global neoliberal economics and the politics of selfishness behind us by telling our politicans we want a fairer more co-operative more self -sustainable country.
And if they don’t make these things policy eg. a fairer tax system that does not punish the poor with GST on food, and embark on monetary reform, then we simply won’t vote for them.
Mark my words. If enough of us keep repeating that fairness message up to the day of the election then watch party policies change- because they know that ultimately we, the people, have the power.
Bryan Bruce is one of NZs most respected documentary makers and public intellectuals who has tirelessly exposed NZs neoliberal economic settings as the main cause for social issues.
Good on you, Bryan.
This is the way to walk. The neo liberals have taken the very best and left little to the most of us. It must be made known that we will no longer tolerate this. We are not little children to be bought off. We are the electorate and we are the ones who pay these politicians their handsome salary’s.
As for groups like the NZ Initiative? – we know what you do. And it will do you no good to keep stuffing a political party’s coffers full of generous donations when they are rejected by a populace who demands fairness and change.
