So you get somebody at TVNZ endeavouring to engage in a nice gesture (which, again, I *do* think is a pretty cool intent here – and should be lauded, up to a point), on grounds that they’ve heard that Auckland City Council is holding a “Diwali” event, and therefore without doing the proper research, they just kinda assume … and ‘get onboard’ by wishing us all a “Happy Diwali” two weeks early across multiple channels.
Who has that acid now? Who is in possession of Ross’ property? His family? The unnamed mental health facility detaining him? The Police? The National Party? What, if any, obligation are those holding Ross’s phone, his laptop, his hard-copy files, under to keep them safe from prying eyes? What, if anything, has been happening at Ross’s home and/or his parliamentary and electorate offices in the time that has elapsed since he was taken into state custody? Has anyone come calling? If so, who was it – and what were they after?

Wealthier areas of Auckland traditionally have a much higher voter turnout than other parts of Auckland benefiting C&R (National Party aligned candidates) in the Entrust Election. The daily voting document returns as at 19 October showed the Remuera area at 11.5% compared to the area around Manukau at just over 6%. Fortunately there is still time to vote. There are important community issues at stake.
Please let your networks know that there is still time to vote – voting documents need to be in the post box ASAP to arrive in time for election day on Friday 25 October.
Getting revenge is built deeply into our psyche. There are lots of words for it: “payback”, “balance sheet”, “settlement”, “nemesis”, “an eye for an eye” and so on. Where a person is killed, the victim’s family often feel high levels of anxiety until such time as the perpetrator is punished. It is partly that unexplained level of emotion – often stronger even than grief – that drives the failed punitive systems of justice.
