Historic El Niño forecast brings wildfire and drought warnings
A historically intense climate event which has sparked intense heatwaves in the Northern Hemisphere is steadily gaining strength here, bringing a severe threat of parched soils, high winds, and heightened wildfire danger.
Earth Sciences New Zealand confirmed El Niño conditions have been reached in the tropical Pacific, warning the phenomenon could strongly influence the country’s weather into 2027.
Originating from the warming of ocean temperatures in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific, the system typically brings dominant westerly quarter winds.
El Nino has already sparked record heat waves this year in Europe, with temperatures of up to 45C, hundreds of deaths, and highways bucklingunder intense temperatures. The United Kingdom recorded its hottest June day ever – and the next day topped that.

Mike Smith fresh High Court challenge over Government’s climate law change
Climate activist Mike Smith has filed fresh High Court proceedings after the Government announced plans to change the law and prevent his landmark climate change lawsuit from going to trial.
The challenge follows the Government’s announcement that it plans to change the law to stop climate change lawsuits seeking to hold companies legally responsible for greenhouse gas emissions. If passed, the change would end Smith’s long-running case against six major New Zealand emitters and prevent similar claims in the future.
In a statement issued on Monday, Smith said the Government’s decision-making process was unlawful. He alleged Cabinet decided to intervene in his live court case after consulting companies defending the proceedings, but without giving him the same opportunity to be heard.
Smith said he is seeking declarations from the High Court that both the Justice Minister’s announcement and Cabinet’s decision were unlawful.

Labour promises to repeal climate law, opening door to more climate litigation against companies
The Labour Party says it will repeal a law introduced by the coalition to bar courts from finding companies liable for climate change damage caused by greenhouse gas emissions.
Labour’s climate change spokeswoman Deborah Russell announced Labour would repeal the law as the bill was debated in Parliament on Thursday afternoon.
Russell said the bill was “very, very bad law” and attacked the coalition for its record on climate change.
The coalition introduced the law in response to litigation by activist Mike Smith against Fonterra, Z Energy and a number of other large firms.

Humans have treated our planet in such a reckless manner, many without realising, but there is no excuse NOW for the pollution of our land, waterways, air, etc. since we are so much better informed these days. This CoC is guilty of destroying Jacinda Ardern’s groundbreaking climate law, the Zero Carbon Act, which Labour brought in 7/11/2019. We should definitely not be even considering LNG, dirty mining and should have already phased out bottom trawling, fertilizers, pesticides except organic. Come march farmers will be wanting social welfare because they still think they are the NZ economy all on their own .They may be the biggest exporters but are about 15% of the economy .This high lights how shit we are at growing our startups where we just sell them off ASAP to off shore leeches .
