Broken Tunnel Promise Another Bishop Botch-Up – Labour

Chris Bishop is digging a hole for himself when it comes to Wellington’s tunnels.
“Chris Bishop has broken his promise to Wellingtonians by walking back his commitment to get spades in the ground on a second Terrace Tunnel, while floating the idea of charging people to use the existing tunnel,” Labour’s transport spokesperson Tangi Utikere said.
“Christopher Luxon’s Government promised action. They promised delivery. They promised Wellingtonians they would get a second Terrace Tunnel but now Chris Bishop is slamming on the brakes, pausing work and suggesting a surprise congestion charge instead.
“There is a place for congestion charges, but Chris Bishop should have been upfront from the start, not after promising roading projects he can’t deliver.
“National went to the election promising delivery. Instead, we’re getting delay and spin.
“Once again I ask Chris Bishop to be clear about how he plans to fund the $56 billion deficit he’s looking at to pay for his Roads of Significance.
“If Chris Bishop can’t deliver the infrastructure he promised, he should at least be honest about it, instead of quietly shelving projects and shifting the cost onto commuters,” Tangi Utikere said.
