1. Well USA is openly hostile to China and NZ has opted into USA’s military kill chain.
   I’d have hardly expected any other reaction from China.

4. It’s a little ridiculous to pretend China standing up to bullies- whether the bully in question is the smallest of the bully gang or not- is ‘threatening’.

   Years ago that evil Communist bastard and suspected-but-never-actually-found guilty by a bumbling SIS, economist Bill Sutch proposed we build a self contained economy which would be insulated against foreign recession and avoid treaty entanglements.
   Bill Sutch and his fellow economists are long gone but the blueprints are still there if anyone cares to implement them.
   Of course it means a change from being a housing market with an economy attached to it(somewhere).

8. How predictable. We want our cake and to eat it as well. Best thing we can do is get real and realize we will suffer either way. Thinking that US UK are our friends is “kith and kin” thinking from a past colonial era. It’s time to realize that we have large Asian and Pasifika populations, and that a third of our school children have Maori descent. Our future is as Aotearoa, neither an outpost of Europe or Asia.

10. Who could doubt that the SIS report “smacks heavily of foreign influence”? Who could deny that this influence might “come at the expense of (New Zealand’s) own interests”?
    China is not threatening “us”. It is trying to talk sense into the colonialist regime, even though that may be an exercise in futility. For our part we may have to sit back and watch as the regime falls into this hole of its own making.

12. For 150 years NZs biggest economic problem has been foreign trade barriers.

    The US is not stepping up to import millions of tonnes of bulk milk powder. NZ sits below Wisconsin dairy farmers in the political pecking order.

    If China cuts it’s kiwi friends lunch only to the good.

    Strategically NZ needs diversified destinations for its export products and the products need to be retail ready not commodities. Hire a bunch of excellent salesmen to double or triple the number of powerful Trade Ambassadors, to double or triple the nations income.

13. How dare they! We’ve done nothing to warrant such a rebuke other then engage in a global military alliance dedicated to threatening China’s security – militarily and economically. Presumably we are doing this to protect our international trade routes … most of which are with China. It all makes so much sense.

    The old colonial era is long gone, we are indeed a Pacific nation now. It is just the NZ ruling class and the outdated 5 Eyes entanglement that keeps this country tied to US Imperialism, and Anglosphere surveillance networks. US, UK, Canada and Australia are happy to use us for intelligence purposes but whaddabout fair trade conditions?–let alone free flow of people…

    I support doing mutually beneficial bilateral trade and cultural agreements with as many countries as possible rather than relying too significantly on China. But the fact is BRICS are leading the South now. The former colonies and plundered regions are doing their own thing. And don’t go but, but–authoritarian–how was Jan 6 in the US Capitol for you? an armed uprising to depose a clear election result.

    The PRC is just pointing out the obvious, so do not expect to see Chinese troops outside the Beehive.
