Ummm China is now openly threatening us
This, this isn’t nice…
China issues warning to New Zealand after spy report claims foreign interference
China has issued a warning to New Zealand, saying Aotearoa’s interests may be in jeopardy if it pushes other countries’ agendas.
A statement from the Chinese Embassy released this morning claims a recent report from the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) that identified examples of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) influence here “smacks heavily of foreign interference”.
“Pushing other’s agenda will not solve any of your problems. On the contrary, it might only come at the expense of your own interests,” a spokesperson said.
China is New Zealand’s largest trading partner, with two-way trade goods and services trade totalling $38 billion in the year to December 2023.
Among the assessments outlined in the report was that the PRC “carries out foreign interference activities against New Zealand’s diverse Chinese communities” by using “complex and deceptive front organisations” to “replace authentic and diverse community views with those approved by the PRC”.
…the geopolitical problems created by John Key’s, ‘All-our-cows-in-one-Beijing-paddock’ strategy was always a theoretical problem but the Cold War between America and China in the South Pacific has suddenly exposed our reliance to our Chinese Economic Overlords much to our Washington Political Masters shock.
If China wants to send a signal to the 5 Eyes, it will pick on the weakest one as an example.

Well USA is openly hostile to China and NZ has opted into USA’s military kill chain.
I’d have hardly expected any other reaction from China.
Is that your view from your little box? What an idiot.
Of course they are threatening us – they are the Nazi Germany of our time (including the concentration camps).
To be fair North Korea are probably worse but also a lot less resourced . .
Auntie Helen and Don Brash will sort it out .
Embarrassing Grandfather Winston, and roll deodorant impersonator PM likely won’t
It’s a little ridiculous to pretend China standing up to bullies- whether the bully in question is the smallest of the bully gang or not- is ‘threatening’.
We can just stop participating in the race war against Chinese people and their people’s government at any time, and try those like Anne-Marie Brady and Luxon who have been paid to take part for their treason. Pretty simple
Simpleton
I think we may have a large amount of milk powder ,meat and wine unsold soon ,and you think the economy is bad now ?
Chinese tried to bully Australia – until Australia found other markets.
We always have this problem when we are dependent on single export markets.
When we were Britain’s farm we had to join in Imperial wars.
To Impress the USA we sent troops to Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan so we could keep selling meat.
Trade with China is in peril every time thin skinned “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics’ throws a tantrum.
THE SOLUTION?
Years ago that evil Communist bastard and suspected-but-never-actually-found guilty by a bumbling SIS, economist Bill Sutch proposed we build a self contained economy which would be insulated against foreign recession and avoid treaty entanglements.
Bill Sutch and his fellow economists are long gone but the blueprints are still there if anyone cares to implement them.
Of course it means a change from being a housing market with an economy attached to it(somewhere).
So will the Yanks supplant China as New Zealand’s main trading partner? Yeah right, pass that man a DB.
How predictable. We want our cake and to eat it as well. Best thing we can do is get real and realize we will suffer either way. Thinking that US UK are our friends is “kith and kin” thinking from a past colonial era. It’s time to realize that we have large Asian and Pasifika populations, and that a third of our school children have Maori descent. Our future is as Aotearoa, neither an outpost of Europe or Asia.
We have a large Pakeha majority – even the ones with a little Maori blood. Fool. My children and whole family have Maori whakapapa, but nobodies buying your racist bullshit.
“My children and whole family have Maori whakapapa”
If they are lucky then they might miss out on your stupidity gene.
The NZSIS don’t speak for me. They remain overpaid fantasists and bunglers.
Who could doubt that the SIS report “smacks heavily of foreign influence”? Who could deny that this influence might “come at the expense of (New Zealand’s) own interests”?
China is not threatening “us”. It is trying to talk sense into the colonialist regime, even though that may be an exercise in futility. For our part we may have to sit back and watch as the regime falls into this hole of its own making.
Idiot
roll deoderant impersonator. 🙂 🙂
For 150 years NZs biggest economic problem has been foreign trade barriers.
The US is not stepping up to import millions of tonnes of bulk milk powder. NZ sits below Wisconsin dairy farmers in the political pecking order.
If China cuts it’s kiwi friends lunch only to the good.
Strategically NZ needs diversified destinations for its export products and the products need to be retail ready not commodities. Hire a bunch of excellent salesmen to double or triple the number of powerful Trade Ambassadors, to double or triple the nations income.
We could start by applying to join BRICS.
How dare they! We’ve done nothing to warrant such a rebuke other then engage in a global military alliance dedicated to threatening China’s security – militarily and economically. Presumably we are doing this to protect our international trade routes … most of which are with China. It all makes so much sense.
Well there seems some good perceptive comments here amongst the madder ones.
The old colonial era is long gone, we are indeed a Pacific nation now. It is just the NZ ruling class and the outdated 5 Eyes entanglement that keeps this country tied to US Imperialism, and Anglosphere surveillance networks. US, UK, Canada and Australia are happy to use us for intelligence purposes but whaddabout fair trade conditions?–let alone free flow of people…
I support doing mutually beneficial bilateral trade and cultural agreements with as many countries as possible rather than relying too significantly on China. But the fact is BRICS are leading the South now. The former colonies and plundered regions are doing their own thing. And don’t go but, but–authoritarian–how was Jan 6 in the US Capitol for you? an armed uprising to depose a clear election result.
The PRC is just pointing out the obvious, so do not expect to see Chinese troops outside the Beehive.
I would welcome support from PRC troops to liberate NZ from the filthy american presences here- their embassy and consulate, the two spy bases, the airbase in Chch airport, and their missile base in Mahia.
Do we want to be like the old woman who swallowed a fly?
At least you are honest – but a deluded fool – and bet you feel so good about what the PRC is doing to your brothers. You’d be one of the first dead.
Well you just carry on with your peace in our time bullshit. The adts will look after you.
