  1. More rail news – people still talk about trains – goodness gracious they are still there! Surely road transport is the way to go, everyone is doing it, the government needs to build more autobahns – just the thing to unite a struggling country!

    Where are people’s heads on this matter? Where is their appetite for reliable facts and explanations, and considered informed opinion for a guidance to understanding by the ordinary person?

    The Green Party and others have been pushing high-speed rail as a means of future-proofing transport links across New Zealand. With trains reaching 160/km between major population centres the service would open doors for commuters to work further from home.

    The party is pushing for significant investment over 10 years to roll out fast, electric passenger services connecting key provincial centres with Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

    Party leader James Shaw says the project would create more jobs than building motorways post-Covid-19, stimulating the economy while helping New Zealand reach its carbon emissions targets.
