  1. Not to mention that reality television revitalised non-reality tv drama series whose format had got decidely stale

  2. Enormous popularity … with those whose culture is to sit in front of a TV screen and watch is what “they are given/is cheaply made”.

It’s a reflection of declining (and while still alive, captured audience) audience.

And showing real people in contrived circumstances, or just doing their jobs is hardly confronting inequality or injustice in society. It’s safe.

Those not captured to the format, or hooked into social media hype surrounding a programme, stream music, movies and programme content from other providers.

  3. the only problem with your thesis is that increasingly ‘reality tv’ is populated by actors and scripts.

  4. TV ratings are fabricated with the low numbers and way they are validated laughable. Does anyone even watch TV anymore, I doubt it with the trash they serve up by a bunch of idiot TV wankers who need to get out more.

  5. Yes, actually I have wondered that very thing, but continue to avert my eyes in case I reveal something about myself to myself and get addicted, like maybe you gave lol. Shakespeare for the ages…I think not. I remember that Australian show Salvanua Waters I think it was called, was watched with a kind of horrid, or torrid fascination and then look what sprung from that, icons like the Khardashians.

  6. There is almost nothing “real” in reality TV. The shows are scripted and often multiple takes are required to get the right shot. You often see people running, for example, from two camera angles where you know for certain that the camera should see each other – but they don’t – undeniable proof that the shot was filmed twice. I factually know a lot of the dialogue and action is fully scripted (from documentaries/interviews on the subject) – i.e. the “contestants” are told what to say and do. I look at Reality TV like Professional Wrestling – everyone (I hope) knows it’s not a “real” sport/competition, but it can still be superficially entertaining like any regular scripted show.
