Government could legislate to overturn court ruling, saving billions in veterans’ support payments
The Government is not ruling out legislating to overturn a court ruling about military veterans’ entitlements, which would potentially save over a billion dollars.
…the High Court ruling that Veterans’ Affairs had been getting it wrong over Agent Orange and other veteran welfare claims is clear cut in its withering criticism of the way Veteran’s Affairs have done all they can to get out of their obligations to our veterans.
I am no supporter of the Vietnam Conflict or most any wars, but if we ask Kiwis to risk their lives in the ‘national interest’ then surely we have an obligation to look after the trauma costs and health costs of that service.
What Veterans’ Affairs have been shamefully doing is what every Government Department tasked with care does, everything to not care.
That it took a High Court case to explicitly point out the craven cruelty of Veterans’ Affairs is one thing, to now legislate over the top of that to save money from paying out compensation to those veterans’ is totally other thing.
This is obscene, surely even you craven National, ACT, NZF scumbags will be outraged at what the Government is doing.

The COC will do any thing to make it look like they are running a tight ship ,just like they are now backing out of paying compensation to people abused in care for the last 50 plus years and also they have not paid nurses the back pay from the holiday fiasco starting 10 years ago .Along with the pay equity cuts this all adds up to billions .SO what has happened to the billions that WILLIS has borrowed ?because they sure as hell aint building anything and are feeding our Tamariki dog food for lunch .

I was beginning to have some respect for Penk, the Minister for Veterans. He was in the Navy briefly, actually had a proper job outside Wellington, but that’s gone.

Alternatively, given that that war- like many fought in the last century and more- did nothing to benefit New Zealand or New Zealanders but was fought for entirely foreign interests, perhaps it would be sensible to deliver a lesson to aspiring mercenaries that they will not be compensated even for harm caused to them by ‘their’ own government or the foreign interests it serves (the US empire, in the case of the war against the Vietnamese).

My late father was in the RAF during the War. He later went into the RCAF. During the War he did bombing over Germany and along with his crew were lucky to live out that War. Many lost their lives and many lost limbs. Even more recent wars have resulted in a lose of life and limbs.
For this government that Has Never Been at War to be more concerned about money than War Injuries eg PTSD etc shows them up for their total Hypocrisy. They are just Simply Put Inhuman.
Sure Jacinda’s government didn’t have to deal with a war but I would say that the Mosque Massacres is close enough to being in a war zone. I doubt Luxon would have handled what happened in the same Empathetic, Caring and Kind Way Jacinda did.
