National Breaks Promise To Deliver 500 More Police – Labour

Today is the deadline for National to deliver 500 extra Police officers – a core coalition promise that has collapsed under Christopher Luxon’s weak leadership.

“New Zealanders have been let down. National promised 500 extra Police by 27 November 2025, but they’ve failed miserably,” Labour Police spokesperson Ginny Andersen said.

“First National swore the 500 officers would be delivered by November 2025. Then it was June 2026. Then August, and now it’s September 2026. At this rate it’s hard to see them delivering by the election.

“Mark Mitchell knew as early as January 2024, that the target was out of reach. Instead of fronting up, National kept shifting the goalposts.

“It completely undermines Mark Mitchell’s credibility. He sets deadlines, then misses them. It’s got so bad he’s now refusing to set a new one.

“National’s failure heaps pressure on an already stretched frontline. With meth use increasing and gangs making record profits, Police need real backing – not empty promises.

“National talks tough on crime, but it’s hollow when they can’t deliver their core law and order pledge,” Ginny Andersen said.
