Sir Trevor Mallard was explicitly told by police leadership that soaking the anti-mandate protesters at Parliament in water and playing “bad music” would make the situation worse – and yet he persisted.
That determination now has Mallard – former Speaker of the House and now New Zealand’s ambassador to Ireland – facing a High Court case brought by a girl who was 11 at the time of the protest.
The child, who is from Northland but will seek name suppression, claims Mallard blasting “Let It Go” and “Baby Shark” while soaking her with water weaponised “songs that she liked”, causing “mental anguish, humiliation, degradation and dehumanisation”.
The case seeks a declaration that the child’s rights were breached, as well as damages of $40,000 for three separate breaches.
It’s the latest in a number of Covid-19-related cases filed by lawyer Tudor Clee that seek rulings on alleged breaches of rights during the pandemic, and is set for its first outing at the High Court in Wellington on July 7.
GOOD!
He has never been punished for his mishandling of the Dumb Lives Matter Protest!
I supported our amazing response to Covid.
I believe we handled it better than most other countries because of Jacinda’s leadership…
…part of that undoing was te way the Dumb Lives Matter protest were handled.
*
I was goading many of the protestors as they convoyed down to Parliament.
I was angry that I had not been included in their list of people they wanted to hang on Parliament Grounds during their show trial.
While I mocked these people, I supported their right to protest because this is a liberal progressive democracy and you have that right.
I believe we did the best we could in a once in a century pandemic and I supported the mandates.
However, because this is a liberal progressive democracy, you can’t hold people down and force an injection into. All injections have to be consensual, and again, because this is a liberal progressive democracy, you have the right to not consent, for whatever reason you want!
While I disagreed with these people, I did agree that they shouldn’t have had to face a stand down on welfare for losing their jobs AND they should have been able to return to their jobs post mandates.
The fact we didn’t do any of that to soften the alienation is on us AND someone from the Government should have gone to meet the protestors and heard their concerns.
Shoulda, coulda, woulda. Let’s examine what actually did get done.

Trevor’s handling of the Dumb Lives Matter protestors on Parliament’s Lawns provoked and escalated this violence while recruiting and radicalising thousands!
REMEMBER! By the end of Wednesday, the factions within this ‘movement’ were already turning on each other with various groups criticising other faction leaders.
They hadn’t been able to use their numbers to seriously threaten Parliament and they were already leaving because of internal disputes over the attempt to force conflict on the Wednesday.
This was a protest movement the was dying on Thursday morning!
That all changed when Trev had a spurt of blood to the head, and got all grumpy protector bear and ordered the State to clear the lawn…
…Let’s be very fucking clear.
He didn’t have to do that, and he shouldn’t have done that!
He immediately created a common enemy for the protestors while live streaming a 10 hour recruitment video to the country!
That weekend there were 5 times the number of protestors!
His basic bitch warehouse bargain basement psy-ops using the spraying of water and loud music at night which provoked the riot on Parliament’s lawns combined with his Office trespassing politicians from Parliament made this a cluster fuck of gasp inducing enormity.
The reason the wider Left are so silent on criticising Mallard’s actions (as seen in the zero criticism of him in Stuff’s Fire and Fury middle propaganda) is because many of the Middle Class Wellington Marxists screamed for the Police to bash the smelly lumpenproletariat Nazis because they had their work from home privilege threatened by angry scary brown poor people whom they claim at Wellington dinner parties to care about.
This is Clint Smith demanding Andrew Coster be sacked for not bashing the smelly lumpenproletariat Nazis…
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.
Mallard was a dick and the protesters were a group of loonies losers but if anyone should be charged it is the child’s parents who opened her up to danger and took her out of school
For once I agree 100%
Weaponizing their child is appalling.
The government could have talked to those folk. Then they would have gone home. The problem was that the Labour government was doing damage to their lives and did not want to listen to them when they objected. Chris Trotter (at that time still on TDB) was another left-wing commentator urging the use of force rather than dialogue. The left was categorizing these people as “a river of filth”. Stupid, and ultimately very damaging to the left.
True G.F. And Martyn puts the nub of the matter –
Instead the people got just stupid brutalisation by decree from government and stupid Mallard apparently gleefully, or determined on disciplining and castigating, using the procedures that should have been dangled in the air as jokes while offering opportunity to state their problems succinctly and given good opportunity – I suggest should have had lots of photocopy paper and pencils and a template of what was acceptable for guidance.
With a large overhead screen for information on the questions and set times for discussion between a chosen person and two intelligent MPs, and also regular bulletins on where there were hot pies, tea and water being served every couple of hours, also where toilets were and medical help.
It would have given a feeling of good citizens coming together and being heard and a little bit of smaltzy music lightly played now and then bring a laugh plus perhaps a bit of hard rock or whatever the crowd requested. A whole new mood and future voting for Labour so they could do something good to make up for ruining the country post 1984 – but they don’t have enough nous, or actually care about the people of the country, just their posturing and positions of wealth in a basically low income place.
Could not agree more Geoff. Good article here and demonising people who didn’t want to take a covid vaccine was stupidly wrongheaded. The mandates ruined some people’s lives and created a deep divisions in society. Tried and true methods pandemic prevention such as hygiene, mask wearing, social distancing and quarantine worked, people should not have been compelled to take a vaccine they didn’t trust and socially punished when they refused.
“The government could have talked to those folk. Then they would have gone home.”
Fuck off, the crowd could have still gone home without being talked too, they made their point. Throwing gas cylinders on a fire they made is not a peaceful protest. That behavior is ingrained into that personality type. Labour did nothing to damage their lives, they chose that path themselves on the back of the unintelligent Brian Tamaki driving divide amongst kiwis, meanwhile Jacinda saved 20,000 lives. Seymour and Peters were batshit crazy playing politics at a time when lives were at risk.
Yes the Maori hikoi came made their point and left .No riots or abuse of locals going about their day to day .Maybe that is because they dont live down the rabbit holes or in the swamp .
I hope so – that episode and his behavior in particular was a low of point petty cruelty that undermined the entire legacy of the government and tarnished Jacinda’s reputation as a truly compassionate leader.
At the time I remember clearly thinking that Jacinda would step up and put a stop to it and reach out to the protestors who were obviously hurting. But she did not – her silence was cold and weak – a young woman deferring to an angry, white, older male with a history of abusive behavior towards children.
It’s possible that this sits at the heart of why so many distrust her as a leader – the lack of consistency and whiff of hypocrisy.
I say all of the above as a supporter of Jacinda and the government she lead.
Jacinda Ardern and her minders were the puppet masters behind Mallard. Ardern tarnished her own legacy.
Her legacy was saving thousands and compared to Key’s self proclaimed legacy of not changing the flag, Ardern is a fucking goddess.
Good heavens.
“young woman deferring to an angry, white, older male with a history of abusive behavior towards children”
She was 41 at the time (I think), not really a young woman.
I think your point is invalid and irrelevant to the real issue observer. Recently a caption comment was invited here; three leaders all over 75. And that is far too common. Let’s have more of 41 and thereabouts, to give real world exposure to thinking brains, not ones parroting an echo.
It turned out that many of the concerns of The Dumb Lives Matter protesters were correct.
At the time Doctors and Nurses talked about how masks had to be used with surgical precision to be effective.
I am not antivax and take vaccines. The covid vaccine reduced the chance you would go to hospital with covid but,
Everyone was told the vaccine would stop transmission, it didn’t. Vaccinated people were allowed to work and they were still spreading the virus.
Everyone was told the vaccine was effective and would stop people catching covid, it didn’t. You could be vaccinated and still get covid.
In an effort to get people to comply with taking the vaccine (or to substantially increase sales) people were told the lie that the vaccine was more effective than the natural immunity they had gained by recovering from covid.
Lies were told about the origin of covid. The people at the top of the CDC knew it had escaped from a bioweapon(gain of function)/vaccine lab.
The vaccine was urgently produced by companies that were given legal immunity from indemnity for side effects. Even with this legal safety the Moderna vaccine was withdrawn from sale due to its side effects.
Peer reviewed papers show the covid vaccine causes myocarditis at substantially higher rate than the general population.
So how dumb were the ‘Dumb’ people who objected to taking an experimental vaccine?
Joseph I am sorry to read you saying this. It is an indication of how people still believe in miracles and mother nature and yet demand at the same time the certainty that is attached to science, which we know can’t be perfect. And all this floating around in our heads and confusing us with all the hard times and death and the long-term sickness left from Long Covid we didn’t know was there at the time. Anti vaxxers would mostly have been better to shut up and put up as there were no proven safety zones in what was a novel situation. There was the same reaction to Ebola in Africa and elsewhere. It was irrational with Covid19 to adopt this prove the safety to me suspicion.
I do not remember ever being told that the vaccine would stop you getting covid it was always sold as reducing the severity of the covid if you caught it . In hindsight perhaps the mandates were harsh but to be fair the government was dealing with unknown event and went with what seemed best way for the majority to keep the lights on and the hospitals functioning.
Well said Trevor you have remembered well .Most kiwis have forgotten that we were dealing with the unknown .
We weren’t told the vaccine would stop transmission or we wouldn’t get covid. We were still urged to be cautious, use masks, wash hands and keep our distance from others.
We all knew the vaccine was imperfect and experimental but we weren’t told it could be harmful to some. They hoped it was well developed enough to not actually be harmful.
However, we all knew it was rushed into production and that some vaccines appeared less harmful than others. We thought we had the right ones.
We were encouraged to fear covid more than the vaccines. But we knew Big Pharma was making billions from our fears and concerns, and that rankled.
We expect vaccines to be right these days. We’ve heard a few horror stories about various vaccines. Mothers of young children hear all sorts of tales. It makes you wonder but as I said, we generally have a lot of confidence in vaccines now.
As for Trevor Mallard, he was always a rogue MP, unpredictable and a bit stupid. Might have known he’d make things worse if he did anything. Jacinda not putting him in his place was noticed by many of us too. Bad decision on her part.
Joy. Ardern, self-proclaimed apostle of transparency and kindness, will surely welcome Mallard being called to account for his thuggish behaviour.
They didn’t have to be correct or behave a certain way to be treated like human beings and fellow Kiwi’s – they should have been treated with compassion and empathy as many of them had lost employment or business due to the vaccine mandate.
A genuinely empathetic left-leaning government should not have a problem stepping in to provide some type of financial remuneration for the circumstances that these people found themselves in. It’s not fucking rocket science.
the fact they were allowed to assemble in the middle of a pandemic shows we as a nation enjoyed freedoms that other nations could not .So the fact that they were even in the capital on mass says the government was very good to them .Would the current government have allowed them to assemble at that time ?I think not .As we have all seen this last week they would have armed the police ,army and the KKK and let them loose .McKee would have been there handing out rifles to all passers by .
Yes, everyone knows the virus came from Fort Dettrick. But nothing has been done to punish the Americans for creating it to use against China and Iran and the rest of the free world.
Yep
Agree and banning Peters, of all people, for actually talking to the protesters was the icing on the cake. Spite and stupidity, such a shame and stain. This was the turning point for Labour’s catastrophic loss, and Chippys captains call did the rest.
Getting wet and listening to music in the middle of summer sounds like your average music festival.
Politicised soft cock millennial parents are behind this.
Wrong music. The song needed was one about ‘To everything there is a season turn-‘
A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it’s not too late
1965 The Byrds https://genius.com/The-byrds-turn-turn-turn-to-everything-there-is-a-season-lyrics
And while being a bit cynical as with Tom Lehrer ‘The Folk Song Army’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tDZ5lriIIc
This wasn’t the appropriate thinking for the time and place.
People’s needs are not something to be cynical about jack.
Using the kid as a weapon.
Disgusting.
You mean like all those awareness and activist groups who scream and delude their cause ,using kids safety and poverty as there reason for existing. You mean those people who politicize kids?
” Mallard should be held to account ”
Mallard who spend 40 years in parliament being well renumerated and enjoys the gold plated perks had lost all perspective due to his own arrogance and entitlement.
He will never be held accountable. Mallard is a entitled parliamentarian. They don’t do accountability.
Mallard created an opportunity for Ardern to be the leader she and others believed her to be.
But nothing.
It was a fatal mistake and missed career opportunity for her and her cherished legacy.
The anger has not gone away.
Jacinda should have met the protesters, controlled idiots like Mallard and things might have ended differently.
I can only surmise she was exhausted by then and her own party was behaving badly.

“That weekend there were 5 times the number of protestors!”
I assume that was compared to a day in the midweek.
Weekends can free up a lot of people for non work-related activity.
We weren’t told the vaccine would stop transmission or we wouldn’t get covid. We were still urged to be cautious, use masks, wash hands and keep our distance from others.

Some good comments here…but…hindsight is always great.
Mallard did not help that is for sure, likewise Groundswell and the rest of the agent provocateurs.
The mistake the cops made was not using intelligence to have some idea of what was likely to happen. “Coming down hard” should have occurred on day one to prevent an occupation of Parliament grounds in the first instance.
As for mandates, this will be discussed for years, but I give diddly really for anti vax munters happy to potentially endanger others lives. My partner, a union organiser during COVID had meetings with smoking, Mc Donald’s munching members coming out with “why should we be forced to put this dangerous vaccine in our bodies…”
The parents of this kid are not interested in her wellfare ,only pushing Peters hate motivated attack because the Royal enquiry did not go his way .Remember the young girl that KEY paraded around Waitangi like a trophy while pulling her hair ?her family left NZ not long after and I believe she went on to attempt suicide .Is this young girl doomed to the same fate ?As she was 6 years old at the time she should not have been exposed to that situation because her parents chose not to get vacinated and then decided that the rest of NZ had made the wrong choice to get the vaccine ,which in turn protected them and the rest of the anti brigade from a massive death toll .Had the right wing been in charge they would have been prevented from most protections and the virus would have been let loose and they may well have been among the 20-30k that were taken to the grave or suffered long term dissability as a result of catching covid .
Are you saying we should have followed countries like Sweden Joseph and yet how many died there? we watched them on our TVs dining out as they had a very liberal approach and many were boasting yet the dead rate was extremely high. We also watched India running out of wood to cremate their dead and bodies being wheeled out into ambulances in America, with literally nowhere to put the bodies piling up. From hindsight I think we did our bests.
And the UK was toast as well .I saw a doco about a lady doctor working in a hospital who spent a lot of her shifts out in the ambulance bay writing out death certificates for the dead people that died before the ambulance got them to hospital. The bodies were then stored in refrigerated trucks because there was no where else to store them and it was often 6 months before they could be buried or cremated because there were too many to handle .
Mean while at that same time we were out walking the streets with the dog and the kids .We had a very short lockdown compared to many other countries apart from the areas who always do the opposite to what is the right thing for NZ .tHEY ARE NOW REPRESENTED BY 3 FERRAL MINISTERS IN THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT .
Don’t agree.
The protestors contained a bunch of sovereign citizen nutbars who had promised to ‘try’ and hang Jacinda. o that & you don’t get facetime.
Police should have moved them on. Ball wasn’t in Mallard’s court.
The court case is vexatious – you can be certain an 11 year-old is not funding it.
Yeah and the likes of trumpoop want to come back up through the S bend to spread more stench
Or could Trevor just be a nutbar making his way?
It’s all covered under the saying the drongos for the rich never look up, which covers all my sibs, there are more conspiracies than conflicts with facts.
