MEDIAWATCH: TVNZ’s white washed coverage of the Oxford Debate – it’s all right when it’s all white!

TVNZ should be deeply embarrassed with their whitewashed coverage of the Oxford Debate only focused on David Seymour and NEVER ONCE mentioned that Willie Jackson was there last year and he won!

NOT.

ONE.

MENTION!

Maybe it’s all the kids running the news rooms now, but utterly ignoring Willie Jackson winning last year suggests it’s deeper than Millennial news bosses.

Willie won it last year despite Winston Peters saying this…

…Since the speech, the British Museum has committed to returning more Māori relics…

From Matakana to London – printmaker visits UK capital to see taonga that inspired his art

The discussion around the return of indigenous artefacts to their countries of origin was highlighted earlier this year, when Willie Jackson visited London.

He became the first Māori to debate at Oxford Union, arguing why British Museums are very British.

“British Museums are very, very British. Because it’s very, very, very British to take from indigenous people and never give it back,” Jackson says.

…and Mākereti Papakura who he referenced in his opening has been awarded a posthumous degree…

Posthumous degree for “groundbreaking” Māori woman

A university has awarded a posthumous degree to its first female student from an indigenous community, more than 100 years after she began her studies.

Born in New Zealand in 1873, Mākereti Papakura is believed to be the first Māori woman to enrol at the University of Oxford.

The university said she had explored the customs of her people of the Māori Te Arawa iwi [tribe] from a female perspective through her “groundbreaking” research. But she died in 1930, just weeks before she was due to present her thesis.

Prof Irene Tracey, Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford, will award the degree of MPhil in Anthropology at a ceremony in the Sheldonian theatre later in the year.

…so not only did Willie win, his speech created real change.

How are dem cowboys Winston?

Willie’s son, Hiku produced one of the best stories of 2024…

…Willie got very little recognition for this.

He deserved a lot more.

He did us all incredibly proud, except at TVNZ where if its white, it”s alllllllll right.

And when it’s brown, take it down.

TVNZ appreciate that David Seymour can’t cut their funding right?

Such pathetic coverage from TVNZ.

    • So agree with you there. It is a Diabolical Useless Lot.
I am so over that stupid “Breakfast News” because it seems to me that the former netballer Jenny-May ALWAYS HAS TO GIVE HER TUPPENCE OF OPINION ON THINGS.
Recently when in political poll it looked like National and Luxon were ahead of Labour and Hipkins the sycophantic Jenny May’s voice sounded all boastful and praising of her Beloved Luxon.

  1. I think TVNZ poll at the begining of the week was rigged as well .I read on stuff yesterday that they dont interview poor people or people that dont have qualifications .They probably eliminate brown people as well .

  2. He will of course be wonderful particularly if he spills the beans on factions in New Zealand pushing Apartheid.

  3. I’m surprised they’d invited someone who is a known Atlas acolyte.
It sounds as if the audience listened quietly but disagreed with Seymour’s stance.
Let’s hope that indicates that the world has moved on, with many believing that big business exists to serve the people, not the other way around.
There was Seymour telling the debate that NZ has made recompence for theft of land etc. while he’s been undermining and planning to stop as much of that recompence and acknowledgement of hurt, as he can. Deliberately mis-interpreting facts and feeding racism wherever he can.
I’m sure the participants knew that he appeared to have been taking credit for work he didn’t do and has no intention of supporting.

  4. How pathetic and disingenuous of David Seymour to imply that he had earlier been unaware of Willie Jackson’s participation and win at the Oxford Union debate last year.

“Seymour said he thought the invite was a prank until he saw that Labour MP Willie Jackson had participated in a debate at the union last year”.

It seems One News omitting reference to Willie Jackson’s success is either to try to minimise his achievement, or to distort fact. What other reasons could there be to leave out this relevant information?

  5. Not only are they ignoring Jackson, they’re covering up the fact that Seymour didn’t just ‘lose’ in that his advocacy for racial hatred was rejected by votes both before and after his rant- he lost by the standards of the Oxford Union, which is to say, after hearing Tim Jago’s mate rant on about how he has the right to steal the birthright of Maoris, those in attendance rejected his racial hatred MORE strongly than they did before he opened his foreign yap to spray a bunch of foreign Canadian nonsense.

  6. And still no acknowledgement of Willies great win last year 1 news last night .Dallow gives me the shits they way he spouts Te Reo every night when he really despises Maori .
