We knew it would be bad, but sweet Jesus this was so much worse than anyone imagined!
It was the Bully Budget!
It was the anti-Robin Hood Budget!
It was a War on Workers Budget!
Sanctions on teenagers on welfare, rising unemployment, more child poverty, less money for RNZ to keep this Government accountable, and $650Million less for Māori!
As Bernard Hickey put it…
Willis ‘goes for growth’ with slower GDP growth forecast, higher borrowing, less housing spending, lower KiwiSaver contributions & a net fiscal contraction of three percentage points of GDP
…they are literally, not figuratively or metaphorically, they are literally taking out of the pockets of the poorest workers to put directly into the pockets of the bosses FFS!
$12Billion from working women and men
$6Billion into the pockets of the bosses!
This isn’t ‘Trickle Down Economics’, they want to defy gravity and are demanding ‘Trickle Up Economics’!
This Government has robbed $2.7b each year from working women and men to pay for donors interests
National steals today what tomorrow never brings!
I think the Political Left in NZ have miscomprehended Nicola Willis and her Budget butchery.
Voters do not appreciate how much of a wide eyed free market NZ Initiative Acolyte that Nicola Willis is.
She believes as a matter of faith that if you cut back the state, the free market will step in and do the job cheaper.
There is no economic plan here because as far as the Minister of Finance is concerned, the savage cuts to public services IS the economic plan!
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.
Great news for car and tractor sales people .Every farmer will be out today ticking up a 100k tractor and a 100k ute to go along side it .I look forward to seeing all the new utes when I drop the grandkids off at school over the next few months .The finance companies will be rubbing their hands together .Prices of utes will go up tomorrow as they flock in to buy a new one .Thousands of companies will do the same thing ,but I have yet to see a 100k ute earn an extra 100k per year for any company .Yet 100k spent on wages will get a return of 300k for the company .I dont see any major growth in the economy other than a sugar hit of debt to pay for new utes which will have the feel good factor till the first payment is due .
a note for bomber ,boomers ,that you despise .got a $15 dollar top up per year on their rates rebate .My rates will top $5k this year ,thats $100 per week out of my $400 .
please tell us where i can get a nice new 100k tractor??? you realise a half decent one is 4-500k?
gilltrap tractors at otorohanga .
This could have been so much better if the tax rebate was based on NZ only produced equipment or NZ value added and the rebate on the added value only. But hell no… we can’t have anything that might boost NZ manufacturing in case china gets upset. Fucking traitors.
This is the biggest boost to business WELFARE ever .6 billion with a ROI of 0.1% at best
Business stimulus isn’t, in of it’s self, a bad thing if its targeted correctly. And by correctly i mean something that adds value to NZ on multiple steps of the process. This looks to me to be more likely to send the bulk of the spent cash overseas.
To be fair teaboot has a pretty solid point there . .
The only real change to Kiwi saver is the reduction of the government contribution .The fine print says the % paid by employee and employer are optional so no change there at all as we have always had the option to pay more than 3% from day one .The claytons move of the default % to 4% is just smoke to cover the real cut from the government .
But those boomer rates come at the cost of a further chunk taken from younger working families daily income to survive.
They now have to cough up another 1% for kiwisaver every week and lose Best Start from a stretched household budget. That’s significant further stress on top of increased our the gate rent !
The housing market is taking off again as are redundancies. COL is criminal !
So all good for the better off oldies WITH a home and electricity subsidies to warm their toes but in a way those lovely rates concessions are stolen from kids.
Put a smile on Witless and cohorts’ faces but they’re still childhood thieves.
Kiwi saver increase is not compulsory if you red past the head lines they can opt out if they like .They are put there to hide the 50% reduction in the government contribution ,which is the second time nats have cut it .
Look at all the subsidies the younger generation get these days .accomodation allowance ,working for families ,family tax credit,ECE subsidies, all paid to people earning up over 100k per year per earner .And still you moan .In effect they pay no tax and expect gold plated everything .
All boomers will be overwelmed by the extra $15 a year to help pay rates .My rates will rise by $500 this year so an extra $485 with the subsidy .That has me rally peeing my pants with excitement .Im sooooo greatful to Winston I will never vote for him again ever .
The English scholar spent more than Robo was going to but in typical National style she pilfered super. Muldoon again.
Mr Bradbury. Stop pretending that a Labour budget would have been any better, and that in fact Labour’s budgets deliberately got us into a serious economic mess. See Farrar’s post on the pay equity funding fiasco, as one example of seriously bad planning.
Far out, Farrar’s post, you’re not serious help is so right wing slanted he’s lying down. Labours budgets kept the country alive, this Budget will kill it for so many people. Those people will vote this appalling government out and Labour will be required to undo the massive damage this lot have done.
And Wiremu, the trickle down theory was debunked years ago.
So you think that a woman truck driver should earn $3 an hour less than the man working for the same company .Maybe Mrs Wiremu should start charging you for cooking and cleaning she does .
You obviously do not understand about how the pay equity scheme was meant to work .zThat was the problem the resulting claims had strayed from the original concrete.
Who said it strayed Willis, Van Velden?
The funny thing is you took their word for it without any evidence. Just like them saying pay equity didn’t save the budget. It clearly did!
This is a subtle joke, right. You do know what pay equity is about…..right?
If you are reading Kiwiblog you should probably seek help
Yes using kiwiblog as your reference to evidence is akin to Trumps alternative facts.
Meanwhile women are devalued.
Squeaky, I read Kiwiblog as often as this one. I don’t comment on Kiwiblog though because I suspect they will right me off as a Lefty. Funny that people think I am right wing on this blog.
Do a bit of research on the Pay Equity Wiremu and see who introduced the legislation. Labour and NZ First may have implemented it but National/ ACT introduced it.
In fact when it was passed Willis and her colleagues voted for it.
And voted for it in the form that it was in Trevor, those are the facts, not hearsay.
Labour had a fiscal plan on how to get us into surplus earlier than national wiremu and that plan did not include paying billions of dollars in tax cuts (that we could not afford and made no difference) or giving billions of dollars to landlords so rents would reduce or stabilize, and yet neither has happened.
Wiremu that is proving to be horseshit. The economy would not have contracted as much as it will, and is, under these crooks. They are going backwards. All this “we can’t borrow forever” crap. They can actually, it’s just how much and what you spend on. The taxpayer will pay one way or another. It’s just going to cost more under this government
When something doesn’t make sense that should, then that thing could be being viewed using the wrong lens.
The thing that we think of as our governance isn’t that. Is it? No. It isn’t. That’s clear to me anyway. The poor get beaten up, then beaten down, our money’s wasted on autocrats, our time’s spent worrying, luxon, seymour and peters have a zero track record for behaving in a manner befitting well meaning politicians but yet are outrageously over-paid and under-scrutinised while their rich urban besties become suspiciously richer while our agrarian primary industry becomes closer to closure while we’re brainwashed by an all bought and paid for MSM which encourages us to hate, hate, hate and there’s nothing better to divide societies, communities, whole countries even, like hate.
Now, you watch? I can hear them buzzing. Here comes the little flies to pollute the thinking. To derail the narrative, to quell dissent, to justify the indefensible cruelty of a master race of rich fools with their soft pink little hands up luxon, seymour and peters’s under panties.
Farmers and Maori must unite then we should give the King a ring to come over for a bit of a look-see. Tell him to bring his gumboots and a box of rubber gloves.
Do not worry! Trevor told us just wait six months and everything will be better (was that six months ago?).
Thinks are better for many so I was right .It is a pity there was not more money to spread around but the seeds have been sown for growth as we claw back the high ground .
Where’s Bob the troll? Why has he not pulled you up on “Thinks” Trevor? He’s too busy trolling around somewhere else.
Have you taken a blow to the head Trevor? Does your version of seeds being sown start with the bushfire/scorched earth event ? Like life will hopefully sprout from the ashes.
Well said Trevor, you have silenced your opponents, not that they are any competition.
Labour had a fiscal plan on how to get us into surplus earlier than national wiremu and that plan did not include paying billions of dollars in tax cuts (that we could not afford and made no difference) or giving billions of dollars to landlords so rents would reduce or stabilize, and yet neither has happened.
I assumed that you’d at least be happy that they increased defence spending by taking from low-income workers.
I dont see any funding for school lunches so clearly they will be stopped at the end of the year .
Hope so gordon.
Bob troll.
Everyone wins. The kids don’t want the lunches and the government is wasting money on swill.
It suits some people to emphasise some negative attitudes towards school lunches. Don’t believe that all you read is truthful, even 90%Ennius
The meals are financed to the next election so no need to worry about them
Correction, the slops are financed to the next election so no need to worry about them.
” I think the Political Left in NZ have miscomprehended Nicola Willis and her Budget butchery ”
The political system and its wealthy supporters are the main roadblock in getting any meaningful change delivered.
There seems no appetite for structural change , thinking or narrative in providing an alternative.
Case in point. This from Against the current commenting on the Bradbury Group.
” Labour leader Chris Hipkins also made a guest appearance on the show. He offered nothing in the way of an economic alternative. When he should be uniting Labour behind a pro-worker agenda, Hipkins was evasive when asked by Bradbury if Labour would abandon the ‘neoliberal paradigm’. Chris Hipkins is a timid Labour leader who, unfortunately, will spurn the opportunity to lay out a bold and ambitious vision for Labour in preference for more tinkering around the edges of a fundamentally broken system.
Bomber waiting for the political left to step up is futile.
” Chris Hipkins and Labour have not read the room. At a time of economic crisis and with a Government ideologically fixated with its austerity agenda regardless, the mood of the country is for a real change, not a mere tinkering with the policy settings ”
The invisible opposition. This from Gordon Campbell.
” If only Jacinda Ardern and Hipkins had held their nerve, had fearlessly promoted policy consistent with the party’s historical values, and had confidently used the mandate that voters had given them three years earlier ”

I think ‘if only’ linked are the two saddest words in the English language.
less for maori… ah, no. the govt spend is for everyone not just 1 race.
maori truly are a basket case if they need much more funding then the average kiwi
Racist horn blower.
Never mind trumpet, you won’t be left out of the distribution process and if you do feel needy there will be a not for ptoffit charity that will help you for a small fee.
You need to go live in America. Trump will protect your white racism horn blower.
Will-is rampages in her momentary bit of limelight as a person rather moribund.
Still take a leaf from Willie Nelson, beautifully enunciated, is my advice to Ms Nicola Willis.

‘Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble’ – you should know we actually don’t want or fit your straitjacket of monetarist perfection. it’s puerile like all National policy or what passes for it.
There I was enjoying my morning teat, looking over the meadows, and then it dawned on me: if I neglect my tea, it will get cold and taste horrible. So I drank it while it was hot. That’ll teach the bloodsucking big Australian banks! Tea drinkers and farmers unite!
6 billion in rebates for business to buy new toys when they dont even,or can not pay the tax they owe to IRD .42 % of them owe tax and now the government is saying to them ,dont worry just go out and tick up a new ute and we will give you 20% back to spend on a new jetski .You can call it a trailer so you can claim 20% of that as well .The 1% increase in gdp is a very poor ROI in anyones book and that is over the next 10 years .This is the biggest WELLFARE boost for business ever .If that was invested into new hospitals it would have paid for DUNEDIN ,NELSON AND WHANGAREI all in one hit which would have had a greater return for all of NZ not just the few .
