When even RNZ starts to question woke gender dogma…

Why we need to stop using the phrase ‘toxic masculinity’

Many boys and men who are already feeling defensive mishear the phrase as a criticism of maleness itself, says Australian sociology professor Michael Flood.

…this moment of reflection occurs after The Guardian started asking the same questions…

Sexual assault allegations seem to be a badge of honor in Trump’s America. Was #MeToo an epic failure?

The push to end sexual violence has sparked a revenge campaign setting fire to women’s rights and pushing young men to the right. But organizers can learn from the movement’s losses

…Trump’s incendiary victory off the backs of resentment seeded by woke dogma demands the Left learn the lessons of toxic identity politics.

Imagine if the Woke, BLM, Trans and MeToo movements had listened to the 1990s Rainbow Community on how to build solidarity instead of their own alienating intersectionist subjective rage?

Imagine if MeToo hadn’t mutated into a Salem witch trial where the new evidential threshold becomes ‘whatever someone says on Twitter’.

Imagine if BLM acknowledged that far more white people were shot by Police than black people and instead of rioting had progressed their argument with solidarity?

Imagine if the Trans community had not been so screamingly militant?

Imagine if the woke hadn’t started cancel culture deplatforming?

Imagine if the entire Identity Politics movement had sought to build class solidarity rather than alienating bullshit?

Identity Politics is an important personal journey on how you understand power interacts directly with you, but if all you have when you are at the table is a tribal allegiance to your skin colour, gender and genitalia, then what use are you to the revolution.

We need less Pure Temple politics and more Broadchurch Solidarity.

The true demarcation of power in a liberal progressive capitalist state is the 1% richest plus their 9% enablers vs the 90% rest of us!

Once you understand power in that sense, you can never lose an election.

Meanwhile the planet is melting!

Great that RNZ has gotten around to questioning woke dogma.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

  1. Those of woke dogma will never change it’s their raison d’etre.
The Green Party continue to give it life.

  2. “Woke” is another of those “I don’t know how to define it, but I know it when I see it” derogatory weapons of the right whingers – see also “PC Gone Mad” (Previous).

  4. This sounds nothing like New Zealand politics. The whole “woke” premise is based on the postulate that the Left alone is guilty of psychological coercion and behavioural regulation and that it still does so. And my response would be no, it doesn’t. That was largely a legacy of the Muldoon era and as the eighties and neoliberalism gained hegemony, structural analysis became a prerequisite. I reject the proposition that identity politics is necessarily one of declaration and recognition alone- not for me, it isn’t. Look at the abortion rights movement, which is based on a nuanced and complex understanding of how numerous forms of oppression and resistance shape womens/pregnant peoples reproductive rights. Look at Maori resistance as the current regime attacks their hardwon land and cultural reclamation campaigns, which make no sense without a materialist framework. And lastly. LGBTQI+ politics.

As a gay socialist, I fought to protect the healthcare system from neoliberalism during the eighties and nineties because of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the cruelty and sadism that engulfed people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States. Thankfully, we took a sensible turn here and that level of carnage was spared us largely, although we still lost community members. Insofar as the trans community goes, they have had to deal with three decades of neglect when it comes to their rights to accomodation, employment and service provision. ***Of course**** they’re pissed off and militant (and since when was that a dirty word on the left?). Most trans radicals would identify as socialists or anarchists, you do realise?

If anyone’s guilty of shallow identity politics, it’s the raving right opponents of transgender rights. Witness Winston asking what is a woman in Parliament, at the very time that the current slahed pay equity. Labour leader Chris Hipkins retorted that under the Coalition, the definition is someone who its okay to pay less. And haven’t the Canadian and Australian elections both shown that anti-trans dog whistling is ebbing as a far right mobilisational tool? It didn’t work for Poilievre and Dutton, and Winston is going to find that it won’t save his bacon in 2026.
