Another horrific miscarriage of justice – how many innocent people are in NZ prisons?

Stephen Stone - 25 years in prison for murders he was framed for

Stephen Stone acquitted after 25 years in jail for murder of Deane Fuller-Sandys

Every single time the NZ Police get caught framing people for crimes, they tell us they won’t ever frame people for crimes ever again.

They are liars!

I challenge any Kiwi to read the report and not come to the immediate conclusion that the NZ cops framed these people for a crime they didn’t commit!

And what’s the Governments response to this appalling miscarriage of justice?

Why bash prisoners for having voting rights…

Prisoner voting ban to be brought back – Paul Goldsmith

Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith says Cabinet has agreed to reinstate a total ban on prisoners voting in general elections, dismissing a ruling from the High Court and recommendations from the Electoral Commission and Waitangi Tribunal.

…Stephen Stone was released after spending 25 years behind bars for a crime that increasingly looks like it was based on nothing more than the NZ Police threatening 4 witnesses into making false statements on which 4 people were sent to prison…

A man who has spent 25 years in prison for the murder of west Auckland tyre-fitter Deane Fuller-Sandys has been granted bail.

Stephen Stone was imprisoned in 1999 for the murder, as well as the rape and murder of Leah Stephens.

Earlier this month, Stone’s conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal, alongside those of Gail Maney, Colin Maney and Mark Henriksen.

The court ordered a retrial for Stone.

…It is very difficult to read the Deane Fuller-Sandys and Leah Stephens murder case and not have serious concerns over the manner the NZ Police gained false statements to effectively frame 4 people!
What the bloody hell happened here?
The Police threatened prosecution of the witnesses unless they signed off false confessions they threatened to take their kids from them FFS!
As this Government builds a super prison and changes bail laws and 3 strikes powers to include 10 000 new prisoners held on low level crimes, how many innocent people are we ramming into an underfunded Justice system that has little capacity admitting miscarriages of justice.
The value of it being better 9 guilty walk free rather than 1 innocent imprisoned has become better 9 innocent people are imprisoned  than 1 guilty person walks free.
That’s not a justice system, that’s a chilling Prison Industrial Complex.

EVERY TIME WE CATCH COPS USING FLAWED INTERROGATION TECHNIQUES THEY PROMISE TO CHANGE BUT DON’T!

Based on what we currently have in front of us with this case and the recent miscarriages of justice cases of Peter Ellis, David Dougherty, Teina Pora,  David Lyttle, Mauha Fawcett and Alan Hall you get a terrible feeling that Police are not following the evidence, but are merely rounding up the most vulnerable suspects and bullying confessions out of them or twisting the evidence to fit the crime.

What is happening here is a can of very sick and toxic worms being ripped open while the media’s attention is on the petty and the vacant.

What is being exposed here is a rotten process that reeks of corruption. I once thought that maybe as much as 5% of the prison population might be innocent, after looking at what has been starkly revealed in this police interrogation process, I think that number might be closer to 30% of the prison population being innocent.

What has been revelled here calls into question fundamental values of justice and Policing in a democracy. The total lack of wider attention this case and the questions it raises must be addressed.

Our Police worship culture needs to acknowledge that Good Cops can do bad things and if this level of manipulation to gain convictions is what is happening, then surely something has gone very wrong in the system.

A system no one seems prepared to challenge!

Stephen Stone yelled obscenities as the media attempted to ask him questions as he stormed out of Court, we should be sworn at for allowing a system of justice that imprisons people falsely framed by the Police!

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

  1. Since there appears to be no consequences for police when they lock up innocent people I suspect that it will keep happening.
Goldsmith and Luxon claim to be Christian yet ignore a fundamental belief (But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. ) with their removal of voting rights for those locked up for less than 3 years. As you have written many times prison is the punishment so applying petty punishment just to satisfy the red neck vote is only going to increase the dissent of prisoners making it harder for them to change for a law abiding life when they are released.

    • The fact that Luxon openly admits he ” does not care” about the policy on prisoners not voting, tells you he’s all bullshit on being a Christian.

  2. Of course there is a possibility that the witnesses and/or their families were threatened to retract their evidence too.

    • So what motive would the witnesses have to retract a statement if it was true? It’s easy to understand how fear of the police causing them trouble would cause them to make a false statement but the only explanation for your doubt is that you would rather convict people without evidence than accept that the police are dishonest. The people involved might not be perfect but that’s not a valid reason to lock them up for life.

    • There’s also a possibility that God exists?
But without evidence to your point, in criminal law there is no possibility.

  3. ‘Of course there is a possibility Of course there is a possibility that the witnesses and/or their families were threatened to retract their evidence too.

Also a possibility that the witnesses and/or their families were pressured by the police to produce false evidence in the first place( known to have happened before).
In any event another ‘convict at all costs ‘ fuck – up.

  4. And it not just the cops it also the entire judicial system it wreaks of discrimination, racism, biasness, old colonial views and box ticking. And as Martyn has said, there is probably far more in prison that are innocent who have been stitched up. In the meantime, the new government is being more and more punitive but can’t pay out to those abused by its own institutes and its employees, this is disgusting. And I have noticed our new Police Commissioner has been very quiet, why is this?

  5. From the assassination of JFK to the origins of the Covid pandemic, from the collapse of WTC7 and its denial of the laws of physics, to Iraq’s alleged weapons of mass destruction, from condemnation of Russia for its bloody defense of its territorial interests, to complicity in Israel’s genocide of the Palestinians; from the monumental to the mundane, whatever the truth of the matter, The System must, at all times and at all costs, be defended. And so it is when murders occur – The Law must have its victim.

  6. Next step is a KC overseeing compensation payment, and like another case should Scott Watson ever be in a position to claim compensation for wrongful imprisonment the govt will likely need to borrow a few mil to meet what he will go after. Wonder if Nicky no boats has an opinion on this type of “wasteful spending”.

  7. one of the first things martyn has written that i can agree on.
but then again you probs think bain was innocent?
