Oh Jesus Christ no…

Teen charged with murder of US student in Auckland bus stop attack

Slain American doctoral student Kyle Whorrall had overcome health challenges and “worked extra hard” to get to where he was, his father has told Stuff.

Whorrall, 33, was attacked at a bus stop on St Johns Rd in Meadowbank, Auckland, on Saturday night. Police say they are still trying to understand the motive for the attack.

A 16-year-old male charged with murder and aggravated robbery in connection with Whorrall’s death appeared in the Auckland District Court on Thursday and was remanded in custody. As he is a youth he has been granted automatic name suppression. His case will be put to the Auckland High Court on May 14.

A 32-year-old woman, charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder, also appeared in the Auckland District Court on Thursday. According to court documents, she allegedly “actively suppressed evidence against [the murder accused] … by selling a Mitsubishi Outlander … in order to enable him to escape after arrest”.

The woman, who was wearing a cropped top and shorts, has been granted interim name suppression and will next appear at Auckland High Court on May 14.

Dear Comrades, I fear this case will really test us as a people.

By all accounts, Kyle Whorrall was one of life’s true blessings.

A kind, gentle man whose fascination in the natural world led him to be a leader in this field of insects.

Kyle represents the best of us, an intelligent human being with the kind of intellectual curiosity that our understanding of the natural world is built upon, that his life and the light he represents was brutally snuffed out by scum for no reason will test us.

Why the fuck these scumbags u-turned into the bus stop, facing the wrong direction so they could jump Kyle in Medowbank of all places demands answers.

Was it a gang initiation?

Was it a case of mistaken identity?

Or was it even worse than those reasons? Was it vile violence netted out for pure shits and giggles?

The fact a 16 year old was involved is heartbreaking on almost every single level.

A stupid kid without the frontal lobes to even comprehend what the fuck they’ve done here has doomed himself in ways he simply doesn’t realise.

You stupid, stupid, stupid child!

The adults involved here need to be punished even more harshly than the kid.

This terrible case will test us.

  1. The social fabric has been ripped apart.

The New Zealand I grew up in would be unlucky if it had one murder a year.
Now on average we have one murder a week.

The neo-liberal revolution begun in the ’80s by a Labour government has continued unbroken by every government since.

Until these neo-liberal economic reforms are reversed. Things can only get worse.

    • @ J. Go to Portugal and take a couple of MDMA tabs then you might want to reconsider your grotesque, retro-humanitarian opinion.

    • I know how you feel as that has crossed my mind, but in the long run we would be sorry and actually these vile people have been brought up in the same society we live in. We have to change our ways of thinking and each murder confirms that – so we need to start now teaching parents that they need to both teach their children respect for them and show it lovingly to their children and make time to talk to and encourage them in their good pursuits and not just praise them when they are good at sports or similar.

Take a break my suggestion. Listen to Uncle Walter from Ben Folds Five https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCvYPKjRRoI
and smile and carry on trying to be a better person oneself and working to help society get better especially with parenting and understanding others, not being so materialistic, self-centred and unkind, and particularly limiting children’s time on the internet.

    • No we don’t. It’s never been shown to be a deterrent and we have had a history of detectives making shit up to convict people.

There’s a reason why Walter Bolton was the last person executed in NZ

    • Taking the life of anyone is an appalling thing to do frankly, even tho we seem to celebrate it when it is done in the name of war.

We do not need the death penalty it is totally inhumane and disgusting.

    • One of the differences of autism, is that those with autism are likely to act very similarly when observed or when not observed, because they are much less socially aware or connected. But others have behavior that may vary greatly, depending on whether they are observed. To the point that someone will act so recklessly as to even endanger life, or engage in the depravity of abusing children in state care, if they think they can get away with it, unobserved.
Driving around anonymously, and picking a lone victim in the dark of the night, to drive up to and bludgeon to death for the few dollars and a laptop that are the likely possessions of a student, who probably could not even afford to purchase the black SUV driven by the attackers, just for the thrill of it. But then other equally pointless victims have been killed, for as little as a pizza or a packet of cigarettes or their religion. Motives may become more apparent, when the identities of the other occupants of the vehicle, particularly the driver, and whether they are adults, and what their affiliations are, become known.
Imagine if everyone suddenly decided to act like this, there would very quickly be very few people left.
Luckily in this situation, there is no state care liability aspect, so the Police are free to fully investigate, unlike the countless incidents of state care abuse, where Police along with the Solicitor General, were complicit in turning a blind eye to depravity, that was equally abhorrent as this incident.
There is a gap in Police oversight in NZ, because their is no real time oversight, only the IPCA that can investigate in retrospect. For example, if local Police attend your residence and leave, and you search the room they were in, and discover a package containing probably narcotics, that was likely secreted by Police, so they can come back later and “discover” the drugs, what do you do? There’s no point contacting the IPCA because you can’t prove anything, and there’s no point contacting the local Police, since that’s where the person responsible is located. So no real time oversight that you can contact, unlike countries that have a Police internal affairs system.
Going back to the death penalty is irrelevant toughtalk, because it will not stop people who are already confident they will get away with their actions. Life imprisonment costs approx $140k annually, but probably only a tenth the price if you were to send lifers to an Asian facility. Violent offenders could be treated with 6 monthly depot neuroleptics that are well known to keep people calmer. What goes around comes around. More yoga, herbalism, mindfulness, community, environmental connection, diversity, equity, inclusion, for inmates – not the way the world is headed, particularly from the Whitehouse and NZFirst.

Re: Nicole McKee and gun fetishists ’bout ta git some as Gun Registry…’ – I believe the anti vaxxer element was mainly courted by NZFirst.

  2. That woman needs to be given 14 years ,but no doubt she will blame her partner because he rapes and bashes her every day .What motive can there be? for such behaviour ,NONE.

    • What for, what will that achieve.
The prison system is shit, and costs $100,000 a year for each person to be in there.
All of those locked up should be working, many of them out in the community, imagine here in otautahi we could actually have the two rivers clean if we did this sort of thing.
Lock em up and throw away the key is the view of undeveloped minds.

  3. Where are the photos of Mitchell and key laying flowers at the bus stop where is the outrage from the so called tough on crime government where are the government Auckland MPs with their horror and genuine support for their communities. The answer is nowhere

  4. Martyn – Time to play Murder BINGO – if 3 of those following factors come up in the investigation – it is a bingo

    – Both the youth and women are known to the Police
    – The family has strong links to organised crime
    – The youth is not in school/training/employment
    – Drug and Alcohol Abuse
    – History violence
    – Prior convictions for previous crimes
    – Out on bail/home detention

    • Why not include the biggest Bingo possibility
      -the accused are maori/pacifica

In our current racially charged climate (thank you Act) if my bingo is correct that will be the factor that matters most, the factor that help to cement the growing divide

  5. Mr Bradbury. Apart from preferring not to be addressed as one of your “dear comrades” I agree with you even though you find it necessary to use foul language to describe your outrage.

    • What way do you show your feelings when not being so stiff-necked Wiremu? You sound very middle class and uppish.

  6. There is no “us” and that’s the problem. Identity politics has broken social cohesion and allowed criminals to play victim and justify anything.
The rule of law breaks when it is not applied evenly.

  7. Welcome to humanity. Thus decriminalise all drugs and make open-carry legal. Also unarmed combat training could help. Also, also, a small squeeze bottle of a mixture of ammonia or similiar, a *surfectant and the distilled juice of one or more of these little buggers. Much better than a taser.

*A surfactant is a type of chemical compound that reduces the surface tension between two substances, like oil and water. This reduction in surface tension allows liquids to spread more easily and increases their ability to “wet” surfaces, making them more effective for cleaning, emulsifying, or other applications.

    • Don’t put up all the details so more limpheads can absorb the info through their noses (closest to the purported brain). Be careful about giving out information that might be used by a crazy, remember the Christchurch mosque killer had his head stuck on an old affray timeline of the heated up Crusades! Most things actually now
shouldn’t be mentioned, but just don’t make it too easy for humanus nullus to catch on.

      • Fuck off Trevor, I’m so neutral I’m parallel. I only post to offer balance to your ridiculous hard right and ridiculous comments. By the way who reintroduced pseudoephedrine sales back on our shelves? I’ll make it easier for your simple brain, it’s not a trick question. And what do you make meth from, again not a trick question?

  8. I knew an entomologist ages ago. She showed me the serried rows of moths, beetles, aquatic insects, etc. – all meticulously labeled, one species differentiated from another through minute (to me) differences, so carefully handled with tweezers and preserved in controlled conditions. It was a kind of amazement to see it all – the diversity of things that most of us never notice. “Eternity is in love with the productions of time” – as someone deservedly famous said.
This is a very challenging death.

  9. We need to bring back the death penalty and make it retroactive, so we can hang both of them publicly and impose forced, permanent sterilisation on every one of their blood relatives and gang affiliates. We need to wipe out the entire line.

    • Zelda are you a human being?
If you are then what do you think your idea would achieve.

If we had a more level society we would have far fewer of these hideous crimes.
Every one should have a job or be in training or be in school – but no government is going to guarantee this because the two main parties believe in this wonderful thing called capitalism which is a dog eat dog idea and to hell with anyone who cannot compete. Disgusting!

  10. Oh come on. This was obviously meth related. Most likely some 32 year old (parent???) has manipulated some poor kid into robbing someone for meth money. When you convince one section of the community that they will always be a victim it justifies attacking someone who has always be labeled as the cause of all your trouble. You know this has a racial component but the violence runs the wrong way to be highlighted.

  11. And the pattern of our times continues: another white supremacist kills some poor unsuspecting brown scholar for no apparent reason.

  12. Murder bingo …at least one of the perps (and definitely the 16 yr old) will suffer from SFNS. And additionally there will be the bog standard ” love you mah baby!!” In the courtroom . I give up. Take me back to Japan.

  13. ” Slain American doctoral student Kyle Whorrall had overcome health challenges and “worked extra hard” to get to where he was, his father has told Stuff ”

Bomber. When I read about this beautiful amazing man who made our country his home was taken in the most appalling manner I felt genuine remorse for a man I never knew , his friends and colleagues and his family who have lost a son to evil here in our country.

I have a friend who is studying entomology at Lincoln and its an amazing , incredible area to study and discover. The few who choose this study are themselves creative beautiful people.

Sadly in our unaccountable world there will be no justice here and Kyle’s murder and all the loss that goes with that will not be acknowledged.

What will happen is his killer will be portrayed as the only victim and be dealt with by a compassionate judge who will excuse his actions as youthful offending and has had a dysfunctional life.

A short stay in a youth detention center then released to home detention.

Once again a human life is worth nothing.

There is always an excuse and a sob story to diminish any responsibility for killing an innocent human being.

Kyle Worrell’s life has been extinguished and for what ?

He had the right to be safe in his adopted country. No respect will be paid to him or his family when his killer and accomplices will never be held accountable in our pretend justice system.
