Senior doctors’ union defends strike plans, says government is risking patient safety
- More than 5000 senior medical doctors will strike next month after pay negotiations with Te Whatu Ora stalled
- The Association of Salaried Medical Specialists union confirmed an unprecedented 24 hour strike on 1 May
- Te Whatu Ora says it is “disappointed” and “very concerned” about the impact strikes would have on patients
- Health Minister Simeon Brown said the union needed to “do the right thing” and return to the negotiating table
It is despicable for Simeon Brown to attack 5000 senior Drs for striking when this Government have manufactured the public health underfunding that is causing them to strike!
Senior Drs NEVER strike for shits and giggles, for them to do this is extraordinary and highlights just how destructive this Government’s public health policy has been.
This is the Government agenda…
…they are purposely underfunding public health so the private sector can gain.
This Government purposely under funded Public health so that they could manufacture a crisis and slash costs so as to fund their tax cuts and landlord loop holes!
In the Budget, National allocated just 2.9% increase to health services but inflation was 3.3% and population growth 2.6% while an ageing population adds more to costs.
National gave 2.9% for health but we needed 8% to stand still, that under funding has manufactured a crisis National are attempting to use privatisation to solve.
That’s what makes this announcement such a joke…
$20 billion of funding needed, first ‘Health Infrastructure Plan’ reveals
…National have acknowledged that the Health Infrastructure is badly run down, but they have no actual plan to fund these upgrades!
- Simeon Brown has unveiled a ‘clear pipeline for health infrastructure’ investment of ‘over $20 billion’ over the next decade, although it is unfunded and does not include detail of which projects will be built over what time and at what cost.
- Brown said the Government planned smaller upgrades, renovations and retrofits of hospitals, plus new rural medical centres, rather than new ‘mega projects.’
- But the plan showed some of the 56 projects would not be built before 2035, and would be signed off one-by-one by Cabinet, rather than as an assured pipeline. However, Brown did include detailed plans for 11 new car parking buildings at hospitals to be paid for and run by private companies.
- The $20 billion ‘plan’ is in response to requests for more than double that amount and uses a population forecast for 2073 of 6.6 million at 0.5% growth per year, rather than the 10.1 million more likely if the 1.28% growth seen over the last 25 years was replicated.
…the Sleepy Hobbits of muddle NuZilind are easily led, but even they see through Simeon’s smear and will punish him.
At some point sleepy hobbits, you are going to have to acknowledge National are destroying the public health we all rely on.
Your culture war grievances will mean jack shit when you get sick.
There’s a really easy solution here.
Tax the rich.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.
Well said Martyn .
Project 2025
So it turns out that Simeon Brown does actually have medical experience; he’s a Spin Doctor.
I thought he must have been a proctologist given his proclivity for shit
Restrict the health service, user pays if not a NZ citizen.
Save hundreds of millions a year on ‘visitor’ medical procedures that currently are done free.
“In New Zealand visitors are generally not eligible for free or subsidized public health care however they are covered for Medical Care for accidental injuries through ACC it is strongly recommended that visitors have comprehensive travel insurance with health coverage”
So another bullshit lying post by Im not righty!
The patient may be billed but it is after the problem is fixed not before like in the States .Many leave without paying bills and fines
.Im right is correct
You are both incorrect. Keep up Trevor.
What part of ” done for free” do you not get Trevor?
Jesus wept.
If you do not pay then it is free.
Good lord you are thick and I thought it was just Bob the thick and Im not right?
You supporting Brown is like sticking flowers in his arse and calling him a vase!
when I was attending the emergency dept at Waikato the reception person was pointing out to a non resident that they had to pay for care and treatment ,best check before generalising and listening to missinformation
Really? You think we are a haven for medical tourism? That sounds bogus.
Health Minister Simeon Brown needs to “do the right thing” and pay doctors more
Yes. After all Simeon held out his hand and pocketed his increase in pay set by the renumeration authority.
Nos trike action needed here.

And why unions are a necessity in today’s world run by capitalist governments.
@ MB. If what I’ve read on the Net is correct, you were ten years old when roger douglas spawned the parasite that’s known as neoliberalism in 1984-ish. If so, I doubt you were immersed in that particular crime wave’s emergent details. Perhaps you were. You seem well ahead of your times. Perhaps too far ahead.
Wee Semen is a rat of his age, as is his boss, luxon and they, in turn, are rats born to other rats still of earlier times.
‘Infrastructure’ is just another word for the bleached bones of a different age. Our ‘infrastructure’ was built on farmers farming then having their money sideswiped into the indifferent greed of the dawn of the Big Daddies of neoliberalism. The dreadful denizens of the leafy suburbs of our logical fallacy cities.
Our politics is simply a circus with nothing but clowns as attractions, and they’re not that fucking attractive.
Farmers? Are you there? You must watch this. It’s an extremely well produced and equally extremely important documentary.
Urban people too should watch this. It may not be as important to you for the want of better words but it might remind you of that old maxim. “When the belly’s full, all else is art.”

The reason why I’m posting the links above is to try to show to you that our politics is largely a smoke and mirrors work of bullshit to hide the deep and real issues we face. Our farmers have been, and still are, manipulated, excluded and exploited and the reason for that is so simple that the crime that it is, is all but invisible to us. And a gagged and hobbled MSM doesn’t help, you fucking cowards.
The frantic and busy pointlessness of our politics is a work of fiction to merely hide the wealth creation of a few urban opportunists well versed in exploiting our primary industry and that is farming and be warned! Farmers and farming are in dire fucking straits.
Perhaps if you spent more time on the farm and less on the blog you would be making hay while the income is so high.
If everything was built on farmers taxes then they earned a shitload to have to pay those taxes. Poor wee farmers making squillions and having to pay their share… awww.

Brown did include detailed plans for 11 new car parking buildings at hospitals to be paid for and run by private companies.
At least Simeon ha arranged for rorting of people who need to visit others in hospitals!
Yes. After all Simeon held out his hand and pocketed his increase in pay set by the renumeration authority.
No strike action needed here.
So National debt is/is going to be 500 billion?… Not sure that that’s true.
