Gaza faces ‘largest orphan crisis’ in modern history, report says

Over 39,000 children have lost one or both parents in Gaza, new report by the Palestinian statistics agency says.

Tens of thousands of Palestinian children have lost their parents since the start of Israel’s war on the besieged Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics says. In a statement on Thursday, the eve of Palestinian Children’s Day, the agency said 39,384 children in Gaza have lost one or both parents after 534 days of Israel’s assault, which has ravaged the tiny enclave and displaced most of its 2.3 million strong population. The bureau said among them are about 17,000 children who have been deprived of both parents since October 2023, when Israel launched its genocidal offensive.

These children are living in tragic conditions, with many forced to take refuge in torn tents or destroyed homes, in a near-total absence of social care and psychological support,” the statement by the bureau said. “The Gaza Strip is suffering from the largest orphan crisis in modern history.” According to the statement, at least 17,954 children have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza, including 274 newborn babies and 876 infants below the age of one year. “Seventeen children also froze to death in the tents sheltering displaced people, and 52 others died of starvation and systematic malnutrition,” it added.

West Bank

Gaza Doctrine: The West Bank is under fire

On 19 January 2025, once the ceasefire in Gaza went into effect, the Israeli government declared it was adding “increased offensive activity” in the West Bank to its official list of “war objectives.” This was merely a formal affirmation of Israel’s policy since 7 October 2023, focused on ramping up the oppression of Palestinians: widespread violence, an even more permissive open-fire policy, severe movement restrictions, revocation and denial of work permits, severe harm to livelihoods and a disruption of daily life. In addition to all this, the Israeli military has also begun replicating combat doctrines it used in Gaza in the West Bank, including increased use of airstrikes, destruction of infrastructure and wide spread displacement of residents of refugee camps, particularly in the northern West Bank.

Our project Gaza Doctrine – The West Bank is Under Fire documents this process, reflected in  the transformation of refugee camps into combat zones, mass civilian casualties (including minors), and the use of military tactics rarely seen before in the West Bank, such as airstrikes using fighter jets. Israel’s military invasions have intensified since January 2025, and  tens of thousands have been displaced due to widespread destruction. Official statements and actions on the ground suggest a deliberate effort to create an irreversible reality, leading to the permanent displacement of some of the Palestinian population and subjecting the rest to intolerable living conditions in an effort to push them out.

(The project has been covered by the international press, including The Guardian, Le Monde, NBC,CBC and more.
