Peters denies NZ First’s constitution has same diversity requirements as public service

Winston Peters has angrily rejected evidence that his party’s constitution has similar diversity requirements as the public service targets that he wants scrapped.
New Zealand First last week proposed new legislation which it says would end “woke left-wing diversity targets”.
But the party’s own constitution says list rankings for candidates should consider things like gender, social groups, ages and ethnicity.
A reporter asked Peters on Wednesday how this was different from the public service targets of diversity equity and inclusion (DEI).
“The constitution of New Zealand First says the list rankings should consider the gender diversity of the MPs,” a reporter said to Peters. “Isn’t that DEI?”
“No, it’s not,” Peters responded.
“It’s got two words for a start, not three,” he said.
When pressed again by reporters, Peters offered to hold a class for them “pro bono”.
It was unclear what the class would be for.
…so all Winston had to defend why diversity rules inside his own Political Party are the same as the Public Service he is trying to destroy was to get angry at getting called out on it and offering free classes?
WTF?
The only reason Winston is trying to grab some MAGA culture war ammunition is because NZF are barely registering above the threshold and are in danger of sinking out altogether.
He has diversity rules in NZF as does the Public Service, pretending they are different is nonsense.
We want diverse memberships so the decisions made have legitimacy. We don’t want the same old class of power brokers and institutionalised corporate interests dictating decisions, that’s why we see diversity as a boon and positive feature to our system!
That doesn’t strip away the importance of meritocracy, diversity makes our meritocracy stronger!
Attacking diversity is bullshit culture war divisiveness that serves fascists, not the people!

You overlook an aspect of Winston’s that many of us find all-at-once irritating, unprincipled and yet endearing. He brings some style into our cavalcade of political posturing – we can forgive him for his yawning gaps in statesmanship occasionally He’s the male equivalent of some precocious beauty, amazing to watch, thrilling to hear his hyperbole or whatever, and his polish gives a glittery tinsel effect to our grim grey polity.
Greywarbler. Right on. He looks as good as any Italian in a suit, which is ever so much nicer than the slobs in Parliament who look like they’ve just come in from the garden, are on their way to a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, or think that they’re Enid Blyton’s little Noddies. The odd grump is also more thought-provoking than the smug smirks of self-satisfied fat ladies ever are.
However Peters was also the only sitting mp with the guts to address the damaging transgender ideology being forced upon innocent young schoolchildren when twerps like Luxon pussyfooted around that particular issue like he does about so many things. That’s why I voted for NZ First.

The important thing is that this issue is now being addressed publicly, not NZF’s mission statement. In 1991/1992, ironically perhaps, Mai Chen addressed it as a staff member of Victoria University’s law faculty, when VU was still a reasonable sort of academic institution. Chen published a small book in which she discussed this, and raised it herself as a guest lecturer in the Women’s Studies Dept.
Diversity now being a dirty word is perhaps evidence that a reasonable sort of working premise can become counterproductive when it is institutionalised. The same thing happened with religion (s).
With the NZ Police embracing it, including with a stated view to manufacturing future Police Commissioners, the abhorrent violence which occurred at Albert Park falls into context.
It’s a shame if some public servants are now looking sideways at each other, but stopping Wellington further morphing into Orwell’s “ Animal Farm”, has to be in the best interests of everyone who pays the piper.
