An Auckland-based Canadian billionaire previously linked to an alternative news venture has taken a substantial share holding in NZME, the owner of the NZ Herald, Newstalk ZB and BusinessDesk.
In a release to the NZX today, Canadian private equity tycoon James Grenon has been listed as a substantial holder of NZME, with a total shareholding of 9.3%.

Grenon joins the ranks of Musk overseas and the Christian Conservative Wright Family here in NZ as just another miserable rich prick who has a gross disgust of poor people and the common good wanting to have their voice heard.

Grenon’s seizing of an almost 10% holding in NZME should be deeply concerning and is the latest move by Alt-right astroturfers and wealthy right wingers feeling emboldened by Trump’s victory and ACT’s race baiting to ‘go there’.

Commercial Media depends on advertising and sponsorship for revenue.
That media cannot afford to piss off advertisers.
The result is that commercial media never has been, and cannot be, supportive of anti-capitalism.
A historic example of this was in the depths of the 1930s depression every New Zealand newspaper, but one( the Grey River Argus), told voters that electing a Labour government would be a disaster.
The depth of misery meant voters rejected media information and voted Labour.
In the 1950s and 1960s newspapers censored out anything favourable to the Unions.
In the late 1960s only the Waikato Times criticised this country’s involvement in the Vietnam War.
