A quiet war occurring behind the scenes between TVNZ and NZs biggest scumbag company, Talley’s…

Media Insider: Talley’s fights to uncover identities of secret sources in TVNZ news investigation

One of New Zealand’s biggest firms, Talley’s, is fighting legally for the names of the confidential sources that TVNZ used in a long-running news investigation which the agribusiness claims led to the broadcast and publication of defamatory stories.

The series of TV news stories and website articles, which ran between July and November 2021, featured a number of allegations about the seafood, meat, dairy and vegetable company, including claims by a whistleblower of health and safety issues at the company’s Ashburton factory.

TVNZ said the investigation was a matter of strong public interest and was broadcast as fair and responsible journalism. It is defending its work.

Talley’s claims the stories were false and defamatory and says TVNZ has withheld a number of documents during legal discovery, on the basis of source confidentiality – a move that it says puts it at a disadvantage as the plaintiff. It also wants to know the names of the confidential sources.

In a hearing in the High Court at Auckland on Tuesday, the parties went head to head over the legal discovery of those documents – including the specific names of confidential sources who TVNZ reporter Thomas Mead spoke to, and quoted, as part of his investigation.

TVNZ and Mead personally have been named as defendants in the case.

…Journalistic privilege gives protection between the whistleblower, the journalist and the media platform, for Talley’s to try it and breach that so they can go on a witch hunt against whistleblowers is extraordinary and should be leading every news platform because it cuts to the heart of corporate power vs the Fourth Estate.

Unfortunately children are running the News rooms these days and if it’s not trending on TikTok it ain’t news.

But it really should be.

Talley’s is NZs biggest scumbag company.

The Ministry of Fisheries 2011 report said McDonald’s supplier Talley’s failed to report an estimated 780 tonnes of hoki in one season.

Talley’s crew hacked off by hair shaving

Crew members from a Nelson-based Talley’s ship say they feel violated after their hair was shaved to comply with company drug-testing.

AFFCO blasted over ‘petty’ t-shirt dispute

The Council of Trade Unions is blasting AFFCO’s decision to stand down five staff for wearing campaign t-shirts, as completely ridiculous.

AFFCO said the t-shirts, with the slogan ‘Jobs that count’ on the front and ‘Meat Workers Union’ on the back…resemble gang insignia.

Union says AFFCO/Talley’s is trying to muzzle free speech

The Meatworkers’ Union says Affco Talleys is trying to stop its workers talking about the company on Facebook and other social media.

Over the last three years ACC has paid out $8 million to nearly 5000 Talley’s employees – that’s more than one injury for every worker employed by Talley’s companies. 1286 Talley’s workers were injured on the job last year alone.

AFFCO Talley’s is run by fanatical anti-unionists and have so much power they can play games like attempting to force TVNZ to hand over whistleblower information so they can intimidate everyone else in the media.

They are so awful.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

  1. The fact that Peter Ivan Talijancich received a knighthood for services to business from John Key shows exactly how corrupt this country has become. What was traded in exchange for the gong. Certainly it had nothing to do with actual services to business – they are all run with no consideration for safety or the environment, no consideration for workers, no attempt at innovation or adding value or improving productivity and no attempt at operating with any integrity or ethics.
Yes I get that it fits the National brand, but why kiwis allow this sort of behaviour let alone reward it says a lot about what a sick little country we are.

    • rangi. I thought that they – the weight-challenged shortie who got a knighthood – were bringing in Russian seamen, far away from their own families and homeland, and not offering decent apprenticeship pathways for our own young Kiwi guys, and that’s why I’ve been boycotting them.

  2. Talleys are pretty much as bad as it gets. There was a decapitation by wire rope on fishing boat, a cleaner hung by his ear on a meat hook, and a worker crushed to death by unsafely stacked frozen carcasses during COVID. Back in 2011 they paid scabs to come from Deep South to try and undermine a Dairy Workers Union strike at Open Country Cheese in Waikato.

Talleys regularly take unwinable cases to the Employment Court just to make Unions spend members money on legal processes.

In a better world they would be wound up and banned from operating.

    • And, workplace injury and death…and attacks on workers rights to freedom of association, assembly and speech…and they snoop at workers social media for later action.

A rotten robber baron outfit more suited to the 19th century. Boycott all Talley products.

  3. Martyn – I remember talking to an old guy in a pub in Nelson who reckoned Talley’s disestablished his position so they did not have to give him a retirement payout of $25,000…if true, deeply sad.
