Israel’s Ban on UNRWA Is Set to Take Effect

The laws passed by Israel against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) will come into effect in two weeks. Their implementation is expected to halt all UNRWA services in East Jerusalem, and within weeks, an extensive network of schools, clinics, and welfare services in the West Bank is also likely to cease operations.

UNRWA, which employs 13,000 staff in Gaza and provides education and healthcare to hundreds of thousands, may be replaced by other UN agencies, but significant challenges remain in filling the gap. The agency’s operations in Gaza and the West Bank face collapse.

Israel’s UN envoy, Danny Danon, told UN chief Antonio Guterres in a letter on Friday that the UN Palestinian relief agency, UNRWA, must “cease its operations in Jerusalem, and evacuate all premises in which it operates in the city” by January 30, when Israel‘s law banning the agency’s operations there takes effect.

Victims: The total number killed in Gaza, since 7 October 2023, is at least 47,109 and the number of injured is more than 111,154. The daily average number of men, women and children killed in Gaza is at least 98 and, that of those injured, is now at least 233.

West Bank

Since midnight on 07 October 2023, Occupation forces have been imposing a complete closure around the whole of the West Bank, preventing people (including even permit– holders) from entering both Jerusalem City as well as Israel, otherwise than for especially–negotiated exceptions. Permanent military checkpoints impose severe travel restrictions within the Occupied West Bank.

Israeli Army attack – 2 wounded – 1 abducted – 2 taken prisoner: Jerusalem – 18:00–00:50, Israeli Occupation forces stormed the village of Kafr Ni’ma, opening fire on a taxi and wounding the driver. Israeli forces also abducted a 17-year old youth, Musa, the son of Sarhan Musa Sarhan Nasr, one of two other people taken prisoner during the storming. The other person taken prisoner, Tariq Misbah Mahmoud Jibril, was also wounded.

Israeli Army attack – homes in refugee camp destroyed – 2 taken prisoner: Jenin – Israeli forces, opening live–fire, continued their storming of the city and its refugee camp, taking prisoner two residents, demolishing four houses and forcing many refugees to leave their homes while being photographed.

Israeli Army attack – home invasion – beating-up – 1 taken prisoner: Jenin – 13:55, the Israeli Army stormed the town of Qabatiya, opening fire towards residents (while raiding a house) and taking one of them prisoner. Another resident, Firas Fawzi Ahmed Nasirat, was beaten-up, suffering severe head injuries.

Israeli airstrike – 2 killed: Jenin – 19:00, an Israeli drone-launched missile struck a vehicle, in the town of Qabatiya, killing two people: Muhammad Ahmad Muhammad Dawahdi and Muhammad Ragheb Naji Kamil.
