Announce protest actions, general chit chat or give your opinion on issues we haven’t covered for the day.

The Editor doesn’t moderate this blog,  3 volunteers do, they are very lenient to provide you a free speech space but if it’s just deranged abuse or putting words in bloggers mouths to have a pointless argument, we don’t bother publishing.

All in all, TDB gives punters a very, very, very wide space to comment in but we won’t bother with out right lies or gleeful malice. We leave that to the Herald comment section.

EDITORS NOTE: – By the way, here’s a list of shit that will get your comment dumped. Sexist abuse, homophobic abuse, racist abuse, anti-muslim abuse, transphobic abuse, Chemtrails, 9/11 truthers, Qanon lunacy, climate deniers, anti-fluoride fanatics, anti-vaxxer lunatics, 5G conspiracy theories, the virus is a bioweapon, some weird bullshit about the UN taking over the world  and ANYONE that links to fucking infowar.

The man widely regarded as the godfather of artificial intelligence is worried the technology is becoming too powerful for humanity’s own good.
Renowned computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton quit his role at Google last year.
When he resigned he said he was able to speak freely about the dangers and that some were “quite scary”.

In particular, around how AI could spread misinformation, upend the job market, and ultimately, pose an existential risk to humanity.
Hinton was an early pioneer of the neural network – a method which teaches computers to process data in a way that is inspired by the human brain.
It is that network which morphed into AI, which is advancing so quickly that this week European Union lawmakers approved new regulations around it…

Note: Also has Zarathustra spoke in the person of chief developer of the World Wide Web Tim Berners-Lee .
Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first proposal for the World Wide Web in March 1989 and his second proposal in May 1990. Together with Belgian systems engineer Robert Cailliau, this was formalised as a management proposal in November 1990…https://www.home.cern/science/computing/birth-web/short-history-web

Note: The name CERN is derived from the acronym for the French “Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire”, or European Council for Nuclear Research, a provisional body founded in 1952 with the mandate of establishing a world-class fundamental physics research organization in Europe.

(Does this mean that the nuclear industry is at the root of this tech advance that could overwhelm us humans? It happens that some suspicious deaths have occurred to people looking into the nuclear abyss too closely).

Thus Spake Zarathustra, is a work of philosophical fiction written by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche; 1800s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thus_Spoke_Zarathustra
(Will a test for actual humanity be that the entity has or has not read this book about our mind and being’s inner workings? I don’t think any except a tiny few have read it at present. Perhaps they constitute The Wee Free Men or Nac Mac Feegle that Terry Pratchett wrote about!)

John Wyndham wrote short stories about humans being affected by possible advances in technology after his service in WW2. In the Seeds of Time group 1956, he wrote Compassionate Circuit which is illustrative of problems ahead,.

A discussion based on excerpts from Compassion Circuit: http://www.technovelgy.com/ct/content.asp?Bnum=1190
“…what I’d really recommend for her is the type they have here. It’s something pretty new, this Nurse James model. A specially developed high sensibility job with a quite novel contra-balanced compassion-protection circuit. A very tricky bit of work, that.
Any direct order which a normal robot would obey at once is evaluated by the circuit, weighed against the benefit or harm to the patient, and unless it is beneficial, or at least harmless, it is not obeyed…”

Global logistics company *DHL has been sifting through its data on trade, travel, and connectivity trends and New Zealand has fallen 13 places to 43rd out of the 181 countries in 2022, with Singapore maintaining the top spot.
The survey showed New Zealand’s inflow of investment capital and information connectivity improved, but that was offset by weaker flows of people and trade, which appeared to be a hangover from the Covid-19 lockdowns.
..It says the world was not looking inward despite an increase in conflicts and war, as well as ongoing trade disputes between some of the world’s largest economies.
“Through 2023, there is no robust evidence of international flows generally becoming more regional,” the report says.

“Research has established firmly that trade was stretching out over longer distances, not regionalising.”
However, it says a shift to regionalisation was still on the cards, as many companies and governments were working to foster regional supply chains, which could take several years yet to execute.
In any case, it says the world was less globalised than many presume, with substantial potential for additional growth.
    * DHL – Dalsey Hillblom Lynn. It is a German logistics company providing international shipping and courier services.

I think there are hopeful signs here which the big management and transport firms wouldn’t enjoy! This the start of the business-climate change? But connectivity for written stuff and parcels has been off for about 40 countries from NZ/AO, in a modern world! for about 10 years. And the cost is so great because shipping service had been largely dropped as an option for transport of mail. I was looking at a slim paperback book selling overseas for US$1 and the NZ cost to get it sent here was $12 at a minimum going up to much more if the seller doesn’t want to be bothered.

    Gordon Campbell
How does this behaviour from a supposedly practically experienced business background Prime Minister but obviously completely individually feckless, differ from the dictates of a feisty slightly overblown King. What’s the use of having a democracy? It could be cheaper to go back to the monarchy with some access for citizens to lobby for their region to a King. Just musing.

  4. About the thing that should stop everything, the Gaza Holocaust. A 5 hour debate on Utube between Finkelstein and Benny Morris. When in my comment at the end of it I suggested if I had any power I’d declare war on Israel the comment was immediately removed. My next comment made the politic move of I would have done the same about the Jews in the late 30s. In my view it’s a simple thing.
