‘I’ve never seen it to that extent’ – city leaders flee conspiracy mob
Hamilton’s deputy mayor was among councillors subjected to an attempted citizen’s arrest at a public meeting overrun by hundreds of conspiracists, with Angela O’Leary calling it the most disorderly event she’s seen in 16 years in local politics.
The event, on Thursday night, has left officials grappling with how elected representatives interact safely with the public after a discussion over something as innocuous as urban design saw them shouted down amid raised fists and calls for an ‘overthrow’.
Fairfield Baptist church was standing room only as conspiracists and some genuinely interested members of the public gathered to hear what was billed as a discussion about 20-minute cities.
The event was hosted by the Hamilton Citizens and Ratepayers Association but also featured members of misinformation outlet Counterspin media among the crowd, including Kelvyn Alp, who was last year charged with distributing objectionable material.
After 10 minutes, Deputy mayor O’Leary and councillor Mark Donovan were booed off the stage to chants of “cowards!” after barely having had the chance to explain what 20-minute cities are, or how they might affect Hamilton.
Everything you need – a job, grocery store, your favourite cafe or night haunt – all within a mere 20 minutes walk or cycle from home. That’s the principle of the 20-minute city. The concept is a geographical reality in many New Zealand towns already, irrespective of planning directives, but has been latched onto by some as the thin edge of a shadowy worldwide attempt to control the populace.
Without a designated MC, no speaking rules and an ease of access for the het-up audience to roving microphones, the meeting imploded on itself.
To kick off, ostensible MC Tony Armstrong asked the audience who the ‘witches’ were – to frenzied replies of “Jacinda!”
As the councillors departed a man from the audience of about 400 issued what he called a “writ” declaring a citizen’s arrest of the councillors.
Once the invited councillors had left, the floor was ceded to Counterspin’s Samantha Edwards, who, speaking off the cuff as her slide show failed, only briefly mentioned 20-minute cities before seguing to “seismic generating ships” off the coast, “weaponry in street lights” and claims the government was attempting to legalise sex with children.
…how fucking deranged are these cookers? Raging meat bags with no spittle fleck for reason.
Remember, this is all over the idea of 20minute cities which are a plan to create everything you need within 20 minutes of where you live. It’s an urban design concept to look at density rather than urban sprawl, as the planet burns these Feral antiVaxx Qanon sovereign sheriff conspiracy lunatics believe the 20 minute city concept is a demonic plan by child abusing cultists to trap humans into a 20 minute open prison cell designed to control us with the vaccine.
Their argument is so fucking insane it’s beneath contempt to even respond, but these Feral antiVaxx Qanon sovereign sheriff conspiracy nutters are off the planet now. That they could become so angry over an urban design and attach inane fears that simply don’t exist in reality to those urban designs is terrifying in its unhinged understanding of the world.
These are people lost down rabbit holes generated by social media hate algorithms and they present a real danger to this election.
I had hoped after the mandates, that those alienated and isolated would somehow find their way back to us, but 400 swamping a meeting in Hamilton and an attempted ‘arrest’ all over an urban planning concept that they have attached superstitious conspiracies to tells us something far darker has rotted into these peoples soul and hearts.
People this unhinged are not going to back down.
I still fear a 50-50 chance of some terrible domestic act of political violence this election and the insanity of Hamilton doesn’t make me feel safer.

One kernel of truth here is the idea promoted by some Malthusians that private automobiles should be almost eliminated. One example is The Line planned city in Saudi Arabia, which eliminates roads entirely.

Color me unconvinced at the factual accuracy.
The reality is many people oppose higher density housing and reducing vehicle access.
Outbursts at public meetings as such is largely due to the council failing to ensure a good number of the public are onboard with their plans.
Failing to acknowledge and address concerns while labelling them as dangerous conspiracists is not the solution and will only create further polarisation.

As a National supporter I was disappointed to see the National candidate seemed to side with the rabble and pointed out how he was against covid mandates as though that is something to be proud of . I have written to party HO to express my concern.

As per usual, this is one of the more open topics we all get to chime in on….nonetheless, I dunno what all the fuss is about, much like any action by our elected representatives, as long as the people get a say/vote on measures they implement, especially any measure that may tinker with our way of life, then all is good. Only when we do not get a say or vote on such measures should we possibly be kicking up a fuss. Feral anti-vaxxers, climate deniers and chemtrail obsessives have found a new cause – pro-Putinism, or siding with Russia in the Russo-Ukrainian war. As far as I can make out it comes from the same impulse, that of complete distrust for the mainstream media and the government narrative, and the total belief in nutbar conspiracies about the UN and the New World Order. So I guess in this light it makes perfect sense to side with a genocidal, imperialistic murderer with no regard for human life. He’s involved in a moral fight against this evil New World Order, right? He’s fighting the good fight against the corruption of governments. Little matter that he is corrupt himself, possibly the single most corrupt world leader since…(name any example from history, sadly there are too many of them). No matter that he is an autocratic dictator who has killed all freedom of speech and action in Russia itself. That’s of no concern because everything we are told about him is lies from the corrupt media, right? It’s too much to ask if any of these people would like to actually live under such a ruler, just as it’s too much to ask if they have ever read any reputable peer reviewed history books by professional historians.
People are scared and angry and have had a good taste of where top-down technocratic rule by design can take us. They see our monolithic society refuse to learn and admit the mistakes and crimes against the individual of the Covid regime where fear of death was spruiked for profit to deliver untold suffering.
As a result,all people can see is a whole line of policy contexts where their lives and livelihoods will be at the mercy the same mechanistic “we know best” bureaucracies who get paid to implement The next big thing from Global think tanks.
Martyn will rail against the colonisation of Chicago School economics but is blind to the new wave technocratic “nature needs fixing” interventionist power grab currently underway. People are being squeezed by the mindless unaccountable bureaucracies of the state forbidding or mandating stuff on one hand, and the locked door of the market on the other. Our very global structure is designed to scare us shitless with insecurity, and tell us we’re insane or evil if we don’t accept the specific assurances and security the same machine offers. Of course people will be mad and seek for a way to escape the maze.
The only solution is democratic devolution, all choices made at the lowest level possible. Stop trying to control outcomes, or people – you can not. The process is what matters. And let the chips fall as they may.

Your only way to comprehend what I said is to link it to the infantile cartoon version of “conspiracy theories” fed to you like baby food. And you are flattered and pampered to think you are “intelligent” and on the “right team.”
When you are educated eough, and moral, and live long enough and wait for decades for our leaders and power groups, who are “the best people trying their best in the best way they can,” and yet the same interventionist mistakes keep getting made, and the same old problems keep getting worse and worse, and the same people keep getting richer and getting away with more and more… a truly intelligent person would question their underlying assumptions and where they come from.
The same old problems keep getting worse because of a thing called capitalism my friend, that’s all there is to it. It’s a deeply flawed system and we have accepted it as part of the natural order of things so much that even those with the best intentions have to stick with it and can’t fix the problems it causes. A truly intelligent person can see this and not get sidetracked by nonsense. The goal we should all be agreed on is getting rid of this system but sadly I fear we never will because we are all so polarised from each other over our silly versions of the truth.
