Look, sure – we have more police than ever before, but it still isn’t enough!

NZ police force the ‘largest it has ever been’ – minister

With 1800 constables joining the front lines, New Zealand’s police workforce is now the largest it has ever been.

As police wing 366 of the Royal New Zealand Police College graduates today, the Labour-led Government celebrated reaching a police recruitment target the 2017 Government hoped to reach in 2020, but fell short on.

Police Minister Ginny Andersen said the Government’s 1800-officer policy follows “a decade of National Party cuts that left Police underfunded and under-resourced”.

“What we’ve achieved today is the biggest ever Government commitment to an increase in Police numbers in history, and we’re proud to stand alongside them to celebrate this historic achievement,” she said.

“Delivering on our promise means every Policing district in New Zealand is better resourced than they were five and half years ago – and there’s more we want to do yet.”

Andersen said the workforce growth to now 10,700 officers – 21% up on 2017’s total – was part of a long-term approach to address “early intervention, crime prevention, and partnering with the community”.

“With the addition of 1800 extra Police, funding announced in Budget 2023 will ensure there is one officer for every 480 New Zealanders, compared with one for every 544 New Zealanders in 2017.

Ummmm. So that’s 208 Police officers per 100 000.

Compare that with 227 in England, 264 in Australia, 318 in Scotland, 349 in Germany, 422 in France, hell even Fiji at 227 has more Police per 100 000 than we do!

No one points out how many fewer Police we actually have compared to other countries!

We don’t have the capacity to create a functioning State that lives up to our expectations in a liberal progressive democracy because we won’t tax the rich to fund that infrastructure!

The obligation of the Government is to regulate Capitalism so that we the people benefit from the competitive dynamics of competition!

The disgusting right myth is that NZ is an over taxed, over regulated economy when that is total bullshit!

Max Rashbrooke highlighted the horror of NZs under regulated market

The bad news is that, to investigate 200,000-300,000 terrible rentals, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has employed a frontline inspectorate numbering … 37. Each inspector will have to check somewhere between 5000 and 8000 rentals.

…there is only 37 inspectors of rental properties for 300 000 terrible rentals?

Similar poorly funded regulation is apparent in the 82 labour inspectorates who are supposed to police hundreds of thousands of migrant worker exploitations!

There are 14 Billionaires in NZ + 3118 ultra-high net worth individuals with over $50million each, why not start start with them, then move onto the Banks, then the Property Speculators, the Climate Change polluters and big industry to pay their fair share before making workers pay more tax!

Tax. The. Rich.

  1. In 2017 we were promised 1800 new cops. It is 2023 and we finally got them. Luckily most will work to protect the rich.

    • How many new cops are on traffic tickets – working with woke kotahi to stop NZ moving in many different ways (bad asphalt is the new road spikes)?

The new ministry of truth, why bother monitoring real crime, when someone might be triggered on social media that needs instant protection and an entire new ministry of wokies on six figure salaries to sort it out the mental trauma and put hurt feelings through the overworked justice system.

  2. It doesn’t matter how many cops we get. Because mellinial cops don’t like confrontation. Thats why they turn up late, after the crime has happened or not at all. When they do turn up, its usually a minor event but they arrive with AR15s, dogs, tasers and a camera crew and lots of good visuals to be captured for the 6 o clock news. NZ’s Wokeratti Police force.

It will get worse from here on in. They need to bring back the bash!

  3. “Number of police” alone is not reluable indicator. One must consider population size and density too. Risk is proportional to number of social interactions. Larger size and density require more batons per head.
There is also cultural factor – some cultures are very interactive and some hardly.
What we need is more officers getting out of their cars and walking, showing their human faces. This would increase public trust and confidence.
I am aware they are budy and understaffed, but day five to ten minutes an hour pleasant walks in town centres would result with less unpleasant tasks.

    • “Larger size and density require more batons per head.”
Incorrect, only more police to bash heads. So drop the “per head” and we are on the same page.

  4. This is all part of the neoliberal desire to dismantle the infrastructure of state. It is in fact the logical outcome of neoliberalism. It has to be constantly checked.
    Tax the rich!

  5. More police is only part of the solution; if we don’t address society’s inequality and lack of community values things will only get worse – even with more police. Police can not solve the lack of ‘community’.

  6. More police and prisons overflowing, wonder why??? Easy to find out.

Stop allowing migrants to come to NZ on student visas or work visas then drop out and start a life of crime or living in NZ, taking up space and housing, health and welfare resources when there are more deserving people who should be here that could help NZ, not turn it into a criminal state.

Minister of Immigration Ian Lees-Galloway has made a special decision to grant the 37-year-old Czech national residency, even though he came to New Zealand on a false passport and is now serving time in Auckland South prison for importing drugs with a street value of $375,000.”

    • Racist much? Odd that the prison population doesn’t reflect your assertion with something like 50% of it made up by an single ethnicity different to those you’ve highlighted

      • Immigration and being of good character as a requirement to live in a country is not racist.

We can’t boot out the criminals that are citizens but we can do something to stop other criminal nationals coming here – Australia and most other counties already have a criminal deportation policy t and other countries like Finland also don’t really get foreign criminals because they deport those paying no tax or on fake qualifications to protect their people https://www.helsinkitimes.fi/finland/finland-news/domestic/17335-finland-deported-unusually-many-foreigners-last-year-writes-yle.html.

Deporting those that can’t follow society rules should be a no brainer and used to be a non brainer but somehow common sense is absent in NZ 2023 while they hand wring for more police and jails at $1000 p/w per criminal, and more importantly the ability of having a safe country and attracting decent people, is getting worse.

Ask anybody migrant or otherwise if they want to deport criminals if they can, and most will say, yes, because nobody wants to be the next victim.

      • 90% of the prison population comes from those paying the lowest net tax.

Tax them more and they will stay out of prison?

  7. Yep, suck it up, pensioners, aka William Bruce Burr, 67, if a 150kg youth breaks into you house four times, (after the 2nd time your wife and kids leave and are too scared to stay in the house) and the forth time attacks you in bed with a bottle, says they will knife you, then whatever you do, don’t restrain him or try to defend yourself, because he will get youth detention and you might get prison and if you are not convicted they will find another charge to get you on!

NZ life seems to be stop working, leave your home, business and car keys to the criminals so you won’t be arrested yourself for vigilantes behaviour as you defend yourself or your belongings?????

Likewise just treat any day as your last if you have a small business. https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2022/11/sandringham-stabbing-man-charged-with-murder-of-dairy-worker-janak-patel-granted-interim-name-suppression.html

Don’t pick up old “lady” hitchhikers, even if you have a good heart – could be the last thing that happens to you or you are unable to work at your career afterwards.

  8. Plenty of people want to come to NZ https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/immigration-is-running-hotter-than-ever-is-that-good-or-bad-news-for-the-economy/5WCGMIMB7JHHZPX7247LKEHR6A/ , free money from criminal activity, free welfare galore – very little change of deportation. Word is out, easy pickings!

Funny how in spite of record immigration they can’t seem to get doctors and nurses or even workers that can do the job. Universities are getting D students now, not A students from international courses. It’s not about the course.

Migrants with degrees and expert skills that NZ can use, are in short supply while immigration is running hot with dependants migrating to NZ that needs state help, kids, elderly, takeout owners, students and low waged. Funny how poverty seems to be an outcome!

NZ neoliberal, laissez-faire policy doesn’t care about who is coming and going. The NZ way is to go for migrant bums on seats, whether they will end up as charity cases, in the justice system, in schools, hospitals or in jail, they don’t worry about.

Migrant quality and ability to thrive in NZ is not a criteria – just like climate change is not on wake kotahi agenda – why worry about the future!

Keep building jails and advertising for more woke corrections staff constantly on TV. Funny how they fail to bother to advertise the same way for NZ nurses and doctors to go into those fields – no industry adverting for bus or truck drivers. I guess that shows where NZ wants to go – corrections staff is the main growth industry they care about not health care and other essential services.

  9. Mā te whai raiwhara i ia kāinga, ka whakapaukaha i te whakahaere tūmatanui o te iwi. Ka whakapaukaha te whakawhanaungatanga ā-tangata, te whakapono tōrangapū, me te kaha whakahaere o te iwi. Ka whakapaukaha hoki i te whakararuraru i ngā whakapaukaha ā-tangata o te kāwanatanga, ka whakapaukaha i te whakapono ā-tangata, me te whakararuru i te whakaaro tōrangapū.

    • Let me simplify my point so that you understand.

I am successful compared to the world average, or the first world average, or national average, it doesn’t matter.

However, I’m not arrogant enough to think that this success can be replicated through the barrel of a machine gun – the only reason I have it was because I was born into exceptionally lucky circumstances and encountered even more lucky events throughout my entire life.

Indeed, I would never say that I deserve what I have over people like you. For example, I did not choose not to be intellectually handicapped, much like you did not have any choice in the matter. I did not choose to be literate, much like you did not choose to be so poor at reading comprehension. I did not ‘choose’ not to be a felon, much like your own felony was inevitable.

On the other hand, you seem to think that you “deserve” what you have because of machine guns. As I said, the irony is amusing.

  10. How about if you are under 30 and are unemployed for over 6 months, you are subjected to a basic physical by a government doctor, and if found fit, are put to work fixing the roads or on other community beneficial projects for 20 hours a week at minimum wage? Less time to do the devil’s work and they may even learn some useful life skills.

To0 many useless & feckless people causing too many problems in our communities, we need some real solutions. You could make it fully optional, but if you refuse, your benefit is cut or for non-citizens, you get deported. Might have to mention this to my local ACT candidate, sound right up their alley.

    • I’m in favour of doing an audit of the amount of people in NZ on social welfare driving flash cars and living in flash houses (from DPB to unemployment to IRD). I think that might be enlightening on how many people actually need the welfare they are getting and then look at the tax records as so many are now on cash or getting money from criminal activity. Once those are weaned off cash jobs and crime their might be more workers available for legitimate work and training for real jobs.

  11. Interesting how we look at crime, want more police, criminals to be dealt harder etc.

    Other side of the coin.

Victims . . . . . . what exactly – a little bit of victim support. Anything else – no – NZ for this we suck.

    • Not enough reparations for victims. Crims should have to sell their assets and pay real penalties to their victims and then after being prosecuted pay them back. Aka steal a $30k car or break into someones house, or white collar fraud, then you have to actually pay the entire money back in full, not just get community service.

Government constantly victimising victims, from Lake Alice survivors getting less payout than their lawyers after decades, to Wokesafe getting hundreds of thousands while the victims get a fraction of that and have to go on with their lives with injury/death. Should be reversed, victims get the bigger share of the payout! Current system incentivises wokesafe to go for the easy money prosecutions and not the difficult cases where it may be harder to get the money or take longer. They go after easy pickings like government and medium sized organisations rather than big business or small illegal business.

Victims are not getting justice in NZ. There are also too many victims of crime in NZ that may not be able to easily work again and their lives are changed forever. Lose, lose by not tackling constant career criminals, NZ has less workers and with each violent crime for example, another person in NZ may be left in poverty, on the health system and unable to work and function the same again.

There does not seem to be enough penalty to stop criminal behaviour or properly compensate those it affects permanently.

They can get more police, but they also need to look at why criminals are increasing and why so many are repeat criminals, which is the incentive to commit crime here is great as it’s instant cash or gratification.

In addition major drugs are not a victimless crime, and drug smuggling is considered a slap on the wrist, for crime in NZ.

    • Victims in NZ.

100% Kind NZ. Lose you hand after decades working in the meat works industry. No emotional harm reparation. More to woke safe than the victim in NZ’s lack of justice system.

“Judge McDonald imposed the fine of $283,500 but declined to make a reparation order for the emotional harm suffered by Wilson after hearing of the company’s efforts to support him.”

Silver Fern Farms gave him a prosaic hand but he can no longer work. Employer of the year then! Sarcasm.

  12. local bobbies on the beat is the answer but how many low tax advocates are preparede to actually pay for it? that’s right none so they just bitch

  13. New Zealand has never addressed the problem properly meanwhile the Gangs and our Feral Youth are running a muck. The country is going around in circles with these problems.

  14. 1800 cops. This is the latest catch phrase for Labours pathetic response to their fuck up on law and order. Their MP’s parrot it like 5 year olds quoting their ABC’s as some sort of poor attempt to claim they care and that we, the audience, are stupid.

Riddle me this Labour, if there’s 1800 extra cops and that’s your sum total answer to the woes you inflicted upon us, why has it not worked? What has gone so badly wrong? Could it be the bleeding obvious, your foundation to law and order policy, jail emptying with a passive judiciary to reaffirm that completely contradicts safe law and order policy?

    Stop treating us like idiots!

  15. Pay teachers what they want and then they will suggest the job to others and eventually we will have a truly first world education system. Better taught children will not be as easily led into crime .If that was combined with a conserved effort to stop some families having too many children so less child poverty and we would be on the path to not needing a police office on every street corner.
We are a small wealthy country we could have the best education and health system in the World if the politics will allow it and that is both left and right politicians

  16. As I said on your comment section, there is no way around it, National’s law and order policy is a shiv direct to Labour’s chin, and they need to respond appropriately. I’m sure their focus groups are on it.

God, I hate this focus group stupid Labour Party. But when you have no foundation anymore you clutch on to anything.

  17. Every criminal should get at least one cuddle from 120 MPs every year.

Maybe then the MPs will get to know their people better to get a better understanding of who theyre dealing with.

  18. Tax the rich would be nice but first you have to remove their ability to donate to political parties not to increase tax……
Political parties and all the members therein are worse criminals than what you see on the street, the damage they do is country wide rather than just an isolated incident is the problem.

Our govt left and right are totally corrupted.
