3 Bottom lines The Māori Party should consider for their Supply and Confidence vote

The big political question this election is what exactly the Māori Party will demand for their Supply and Confidence vote.

We have seen that Labour will never do anything genuinely transformative that their Professional Managerial Class Consultants don’t have a a slice of and the only way Labour will actually do anything transformative is if they are forced to by the Māori Party in return for Supply and Confidence.

Labour is still hostage to the exact same neoliberal straightjacket that National is and if we want to get Chippy and Grant to pass Real Left legislation, it will be by forcing them to do it.

The problem with the Greens is that they are so feckless that they will fuck up any post negotiation and flip flop around. Their entire strategy of taking vacant baubles in the form of powerless Ministerships tells us they are so incompetent they couldn’t get laid in a monkey brothel wearing banana costumes.

The woke are great when it is a Vegan Militant Cycling Mummy Blogger Free-the-nipple rallies or mob violence using the thugs veto to shut down gender critical feminists in public spaces, but not so good at challenging the neoliberal hegemonic structure.

Chloe will win Auckland Central and they will probably take Wellington Central as well, so even if they slip below 5%, there will be Green political representation, so the Class Left don’t need to ride to the Greens this election because they are getting in anyway PLUS they just don’t deserve it.

If the Class Left want real change this election, they should consider voting for the Maori Party.

The difference between the Greens and John Tamihere, is that when John Tamihere says he will take GST off food and tax the rich, you fucking know he is.

When the Greens say they’ll do something, most voters laugh.

Now the Māori Party could make those demands very selfish and look self interested, or they could see it as the opportunity to build legacy.

MANA was set up knowing that there are more white babies in poverty than Māori babies and that what was good for Māori babies in poverty was good for white babies in poverty.

This is an opportunity for the Māori Party to build a unique coalition of voters desperate for transformative change.

I think the 3 bottom lines in return for their Supply and Confidence vote should be broad universal policies that make an immediate material difference to the poorest amongst us.

1 – Remove GST from food.

2 – Tax the rich with a financial transaction tax

3 – Follow Commerce Commission recommendations to set up new supermarket option  using Iwi in the same way as 2Degrees was created as the owners with a focus to lower cost to consumers, raise wages and conditions for staff and pay more to suppliers.

Removing GST from food, taxing the rich with a financial transaction tax and creating a new supermarket chain around Iwi would build the Māori Party legacy status.

  1. Close Waihopai, cancel our membership in Echelon and 5-Eyes, end Andrew Little’s plan to sign us up for the nuclear AUKUS pact. Ban all foreign military vessels from entering our ports. End all military exercises with foreign armed forces.
Declare neutrality and send a diplomatic mission to the UN to confirm our international recognition of this country’s neutral status from the UN General Assembly and Security Council.

The Maori Party could do this country a great service and save many New Zealanders lives if they prevented us from being drawn into any more unjust wars and foreign incursions and demanded New Zealand become a neutral country..

  2. Genuine question: how much revenue does the Māori Party think the Financial Transaction Tax will raise?
Will it make up for the lost revenue from taking GST off food?

    • The FTT can be set to collect whatever one desires.
Collecting it may well be more difficult once financial transactions are taken off shore. The “big four” may well have tarnished their reputations but they will continue to do business and find ways to benefit their clients.
They have generally outsmarted the authorities and there is no reason to believe that they will not continue to outsmart them.

      My genuine (uneducated) opinion.

      • The greens in 2017 said a 0.01% ftt tax would bring in 365 million dollars a month on electronic transactions moving offshore alone. It would be a damn site more now. IF FTT tax was applied to all electronic transactions in place of GST now it would be a huge . along with a tax reduction of 14% for the lower income people not having to pay 15% Gst.

  3. You’ve forgotten the most important proposal that the Maori Party have ever made. After corporate interests ensured it was dumped by both major parties, the Maori Party were the only ones to support reviving the Full Employment Policy — a full six years before Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn could do the same.

They claimed they would once again abolish unemployment, and the dole would no longer need to exist. The policy then disappeared.

Breaking up the duopoly of Woolworths and Foodstuffs Co-Op needs to happen, but there are more pressing issues. The local economy is a basket case, with barely any advanced production, and far too reliant on primary industries — it’s a sure-fire recipe for low living standards.

  4. There’s always been the political argument it costs more than it recovers. (Unlikely)

But surely you’d leave it on any processed food?
Starting with GST is paid on all food or meals sold via a restaurant fast food outlet or supermarket.
But raw, unprocessed food, would be exempt, meat veg fruit etc.
Put the fruit in a tin, it’s taxed.

  5. I agree with much of your analysis.
But a left alliance is less likely to do this than a conservative alliance for obvious reasons.

“2 degree shareholders to consider IPO……..” for obvious reasons.

Anti-capitalism by any other name stays Marxist. And we know how that plays out.

    • There are no such left-wing Members of Parliament. They are all pro-capitalist and anti-Marxist — even if a few of them might try to trick people with empty slogans that ‘sound left’

    • You may well be right.
JT carries more baggage than Winston Peters and Elizabeth Kerekere together.

    • Yes Andrew and hopefully once many NZers find out al Act nasty policies this will help make National unelectable.

      • Act will cancel the winter energy payment and people will die from the cold. In Epsom it’s summer all year round and no one dies.

  6. They need to sit in the wharepaku on the other side. They’ll be useless in government. About the same as they are now. The need to weed out the CRT Wokester shit from the party to become a proper political party and to be taken seriously by Maori again.

  7. Mā te whai rākau tino herehere whānui i ia kāinga, ka whakapaukaha i te mana whakahaere tūmatanui o te iwi. Ka whakapaukaha te whakawhanaungatanga ā-tangata, te whakapono tōrangapū, me te kaha whakahaere o te iwi. Ka whakapaukaha hoki i te whakararuraru i ngā whakapaukaha ā-tangata o te kāwanatanga, ka whakapaukaha i te whakapono ā-tangata, me te whakararuraru i te whakaaro tōrangapū.

  8. Be honest with yourself Martyn – what do you think Te Paati Racist’s top priorities will be if they form part of the next government?

  9. The Maori Party need to not buy into the kingmaker thing it makes people edgy and nek minute in the next poll their polling is dropping the media are just shit stirring.

  10. It’s all moot anyway. The Maori Party is the antithesis of inclusive. I will lay odds they will not achieve 3% of the vote in October oe even come close. They’ll be lucky to make 2%. What the different polls are saying now is virtually irrelevant but it would be remiss not to mention the last TVNZ poll had the Maori party @ 2% having dropped a significant 1% .

A far more important race is that of NZF and ACT.

No politician times their run better than Peters. NZF is @ 3% and Winnie has barely yawned for months. He’s just biding his time to harvest the votes of many disillusioned Kiwi’s. NZF will get closer to 10% of the vote than 5%. He will be king maker again. He however will never go with Labour again.

Please feel free to take this to the bank.

  11. If we don’t want to die in the service of the now desperate, capital-based neo-liberal American “Empire”, we MUST quickly do the following:

    A. Dump 5 Eyes,
    B. Dump Rocket Lab (principally funded by US defence suppliers).
    C. Dump recently arrived “retired” senior US military offcers from our Civil Service.
    D. Maintain non-nuclear policy.
    E. Exclude ALL foreign military vessels and aircraft from Aotearoa/NZ
    F. Distance ourselves from NATO and other military alliances, instead of “cozying up”, as we’ve been doing
    for some time, now.
    G. Insulate our intelligence services from their counterparts in other countries.
    H. Ensure ALL basic international relationships are based on trade, not defence or intelligence.
    I. Immediate declare our new position of “Armed Neutrality” (a la Switzerland), via all and any international
    channels (including UN).

    T I M E I S R U N N I N G O U T !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. 2 degrees plans all the same as the other providers. So that fucks your iwi lower cost theory!

  13. You say Labour only implement PMC dictates. Why would Maori Party be immune? Look at 3 Waters surely a project of the MPMC. But yes you can trust JT would remove Gst from food, people are desperate. Plus it’s a tax cut for the rich too.

  14. At this moment, fellow longtime, and frustrated, Green voter, I’m not willing to vote for the Maori Party. Voted for the German millionaire etc on a recommendation. I’m not sure is all. I need proof.
