MEDIAWATCH: Answering Andrea Vance’s concerns of Māori Party on the cross benches

Andrea Vance is one of NZs best political columnists.

Her latest offering is a detailed exploration of where AI politics will take us and how the Māori Party grandstanding from the cross benches is workable.

On the first issue of Political AI, what is most interesting to me is the world the National Party seem to think we inhabit.

Clearly an ‘emotional junior staff member‘ accidentally left National’s prompts on an open AI image generator and the discarded images give us a hilarious and horrifying insight into what National strategists think NZ is.

In this image, National reveal how they believe the inquiry into the Supermarket duopoly will impact supply chains. Note the low wattage soft light generated by the pussy LED bulbs!

In this image, National reveal how they believe heteronormative white cis males will fight one another in the street over the misuse of pronouns. “You misgendered my trans friend” violence is expected to peak if the Greens are in power.

In this image, National reveal how heteronormative white cis males won’t be out dating because they will be frightened of being accused of rape if Labour retain the Government benches.

In this image, National reveal how Becky with the good hair will react hearing that the Māori Party will be required for supply and confidence arrangements with a Labour led minority Government.

In this image, National reveal how local dairys will fall into burning Mad Max Apocalypse nightmare scenarios if NZ slows mass immigration of exploited migrant workers. Note how surprised each of the above white males are that they have to wait to be served. They have a ‘how-long-wil-this-take’ stance pose.

In this image, National reveal how Christopher Luxon believes Lucifer’s demons from Hell will start delivering door to door courier packages if the Fair Pay Agreements remain in place allowing workers to unionise. Apparently Chris’s ‘demons from hell’ messaging didn’t play well with the focus groups, but he was insistent that it remains as a core part of National Party policy.

Shits and giggles aside, Vance’s point remains we are about to plunge into a horror nightmare hells cape of weaponised misinformation and disinformation where only trusted journalists and media outlets are left standing as bastions of basic truth and objective shared reality.

On her other concern, how will a grandstanding Māori Party function from the cross benches, I think she identifies the problem without seeing the solution.

The problem is grandstanding from the Māori Party on the cross benches could create an instability that sinks a 3rd Labour led Government.

The solution of course is that if the Māori Party grandstand too much on policy, Labour could simply seek input with National and gain the votes there in return for National Party policy wins. If the Māori Party are not mature enough to govern properly for all New Zealanders they will rule themselves out of the legislative process and Chippy will get bipartisan votes from National instead.

The benefit of the Māori Party on the cross benches is that their price for their Supply and Confidence vote could be bottom lines that have an immediate material well being for all New Zealanders. Taking GST off food, taxing the rich and breaking up the Supermarket Duopoly within 100 days are all policies that would have populist momentum and see the most progressive legislative platform since Michael Joseph Savage.

The problem of the Māori Party grandstanding is solved by Labour being able to seek votes from National instead and the benefit could be a raft of bottomline promises that reshape the environment for those with the least in society.

If you are a Left voter, a Labour led minority Government with a supply and confidence arrangement with the Māori Party is the only strategy in town.

  1. Woof, woof.
Trusted media, oxymoron or just a moronic concept.
Everything that one reads needs to be checked against other sources of information.
Time for journalists to start working on earning the respect of the consumers of their products. Or they can just continue to say that what their followers/supporters want to hear.

  2. If Vance is worried about a future of disinformation and mistrust then she’s both jointly responsible and late to the party, we are already there.

I’m not anti vaccine but it was very very clear that the parliament protestors were mischaracterised.
And the media coverage of the pure trans joy protestors of Posie Parker.

And any of the media who signed up to $55 million pieces of silver to run government propaganda on treaty issues cannot be trusted to speak truth to power – they work for them.
    Our MSM are lying trash.

    • The labour movement needs to restart its newspapers and broadcasting. Any real political alternative will simply be smeared non-stop by the press barons.

    • Keep calm can you please explain what was mischaracterized about the parliament protestors. I am sure not many disagreed about people’s right to protest, otherwise we live in a dictatorship, however it soon became very clear that many in the group had an alternate agenda. The question then was why on earth didn’t the true protestors go home when they could see what was happening , especially the family groups. Why give your children covid , why keep your children in those winter weather conditions under canvas and then blame everyone else when things didn’t go their way.

      • Because they were desperate and wanted to be heard.
Most were left leaning despite the subset of shitstirrers some of whom were gang related by all accounts (Labour voters too in all likelihood).
And the live streams showed mostly normal behavior until the violence of the last day, despite the narrative.

You know there were neo nazis and people guillotining fake cardboard politicians at the TPPA protests don’t you?
Why weren’t the TPPA protestors all typed as q anon nazis and a “river of filth”?
Media are here to ask the hard questions of government, not attack society at the whim of those in power.

        • Keep calm. The protesters encamped in parliament grounds for weeks so what do you expect. They excreted in the gutters, they berated other people trying to get to work. Their messages were very mixed. They were led on by people who stayed in hotels close by in the lap of luxury. How could all this be classed as normal behavior. Those less uncharitable would wonder why these people could stay away from work for so long. Many of them purposefully got sick and put the innocent at risk such as the police. They chose violence instead of just leaving peacefully.

    • I don’t see how you can say the protesters were mischaracterised as a blanket statement. It was a collective of all sorts, some being complete a’holes.

  3. “…taxing the rich …”
Well yes but lets find out where their income came from first. Who’s pockets have they been reaching around into.
AO/NZ’s an agricultural and exporting economy so any urban rich must explain how they’re rich. Then we can tax any income after criminal investigations then charges then the courts then prison.
And I’m writing about the now nine multi-billionaires, not the schmucks with a meek few million.
AO/NZ’s rotten to its core and it needs ointments applied in the form of a very public royal commission of inquiry.

    • here’s some numbers for you Countryboy that back up you assertions about National ripping off farmers and passing that money to their rich mates.
National sold off 49% of the electricity generators for 4.7 billion. That money was earmarked for schools and hospitals. None of it went there.
A good portion of it did go to Canterbury irrigation schemes, which raised the value of about 300,000 ha from 20,000 per ha to 60,000 per ha. 12 Billion dollars went to the “farmers” of Canterbury, many of whom by that stage we’re billionaire rich listers who happened to have just bought a Canterbury dry stock farm but developed it into dairy, with inside knowledge of course.
So 12 Billion transferred to the stinking rich, while kiwis got polluted aquifers and waterways, and the Chinese got free $ trillions of pristine water that wasn’t polluted.
These guys know how to win win for them, their mates and the Chinese, and we NZ pay for that through polluted waters and higher electricity prices and foreign control of our strategic assets like quality drinking water

    • Waipori Falls also needs a royal commission of inquiry. I know who is reaching around into our pockets. I know who is using the courts and crooked cops to pull off hit jobs on innocent people. I know the body corporate is a false flag of lies while a massive drug operation runs in the background. The Dunedin police are doing everything they can to keep this dirty, filthy disgrace running.

  4. Or! Labour and National do the dirty by hooking up!

Why not? There isn’t any difference between the two. Look at their campaigns so far!

Low Hanging Fruit!! Who really gives a fuck.

  5. Thank heavens we have rich people,a cause for happiness.
    Socialists want everyone equally miserable.

  6. Thank heavens we have rich people,a cause for happiness.
    Socialists want everyone equally miserable.

    • I’ll only post once as I don’t have cognitive deficiencies…

Economists agree that capitalism creates– inequality, market failure, damage to the environment, short-termism, excess materialism and boom and bust economic cycles.

Capitalism is imperialism and uses the poor to keep the rich, rich.

Thank heavens we have a socialist government to enable all people an equal opportunity.

    • Yet we can find numerous examples of morbidly obese woman being built up on social media simply because we don’t want to hurt there feelings.

    • Kate, AI is a useful tool, learn to use it, before it uses you, your future employment may depend on it.

      • I am an artist/human, AI is ripping off artists. Looks like the cheats have gamed everything.
This culture is circling the drain. You can pretend to be an artists by prompting a robot, I will stick to actually expressing my human self with paint as that’s the point really.

    • I personally think a party that is by it’s very nature is racist, on the cross benches will be the very worst thing to happen to New Zealand, but each to their own.

    • Technically one of the best things that’s ever happened to New Zealand was its colonization by the British.

        • So should The Maori Party apologise to the rest of New Zealand for protecting their own lands and people because it’s unclear. Why don’t we just criminalise anything to do with Maori.

If you’re soft on rebellion it’ll just grow. If The Maori Party apologise once, they’ll have to apologise again and again like taking bricks out of thier own house till the arse falls out. The only way to prevent constitutional reform is by making the prospects of peace and prosperity seem hopeless.

You 21st century colonisers are weak hybrids of the originals. Save your comments for Sunday Bible studies.

        • Really? Great food, great wine and a better rugby team. I think the French sound a better option

          • The French weren’t so kind to their colonies and their indigenous people, also they were generally not so keen to let their colonies be independent. Plus you wouldn’t speak the international language by default.

        • Please explain why that would be wrong? Most (if not all) of the current population of New Zealand would not be here if that event had not happened. We have a mutually agreed upon treaty as a founding document that is still meaningful to this day and didn’t suffer the genocidal outcomes common with many other colonising nations. Aren’t we not lucky?

        • These 21st century colonial settlers just have no connection with there place of origin. They’re lost.

      • Incidentally, the worst thing that happened to New Zealand, by all measures, was the arrival of humans. It’s been all downhill since then.

  7. No, National is still furious that it lost office in 2017 despite winning the popular vote.

If Labour could no longer rely on the votes of TPM, National would immediately call a vote of confidence and take the country to election using their extreme war chest to demand the electorate vote for a safe pair of hands.

National is far too pissed off about 2017 to ever contemplate extending the life of the 6th labour govt, the born to rule types will throw labour to the wolves the second they can….

  8. It will not funds well uf TPM is in anyway un control of this country. They are racist and elite and even with other Maori groups seem to say our way or the highway .The outcome will be based on tribalism and move the clock back 150 years. Pakeha will not take being bossed around by this party of elites. Labour has pandered to them now they are turning the screws like duel road signs .These signs will be very costly and come at a time when main roads are full of potholes .

    • Trevor how can you be a racist in your own country. Accept Maori are our indigenous people and life for all would be so much easier. Do you seriously think Maori will disappear if we have a NACT government. My prediction things will get a whole lot worse because of the racist mutterings coming out of the NACT’s front bench.

      • Anyone, anywhere can be racist, you just have to judge people based solely on their race, not as an individual.

      • It is hard to accept indigenous when you ate an immigrant to our country like Trevor is. But it is easy to sit on the sideline with very little understanding of Maori and their culture and label them racist.
