Here comes the open immigration flood gates to make our groaning infrastructure scream

The many excuses the Right have used to justify their low wage culture

Massive jump in migration gain back to around pre-COVID levels

Annual migration gain continues to rise following the reopening of New Zealand’s borders last year, returning to around pre-COVID-19 levels.

The latest provisional data from Stats NZ for the year ending February 2023 shows there were 152,900 migrant arrivals (up 195 percent on a year ago) and 100,900 migrant departures (up 41 percent).

There was been a net gain of 52,000 migrants, which compares with a loss of 19,900 in the year to February 2022.

We need degrowth Capitalism using Think Big Economic Sovereignty to make NZ sustainable.

What we get offered up is globalist free market mantra. Both National and ACT (and to a lesser degree the Greens) see throwing open the immigration flood gates as the solution to tepid GDP growth.

It’s what Key did for 3 terms and it inflated GDP while causing infrastructure gridlock and skyrocketing rents.

The reason we have a vast under investment in water infrastructure is because Local Government won’t upgrade a system put under immense stress by Central Government’s open door immigration policy and low wage economy addiction.

TDB Recommends NewzEngine.com

Suburban home owners are fine with this mass immigration policy and infrastructure gridlock because it pushes up the untaxed house valuations they have gotten used to gaining year in and year out.

Neither Central Government nor Local Government want to have an honest discussion with voters about higher water rates and higher taxes.

Someone has to come up with the $150billion over the next 30 years to keep up with the expected population growth from the mass immigration policies of both Labour and National.

ACT and National point to the labour shortage pain crippling our economy and pretend importing cheaper labour is the solution when that was the problem in the first place!

We are addicted to hyper tourism, property speculation and a low wage economy by using international labour flows.

We have become so blinded by free market mythology we refuse to acknowledge short sighted lazy immigration and a user pays view of essential services has caused the issues we have now!

We are addicted to a low cost labour force and force our domestically trained teachers, nurses and Drs offshore to repay the student loans we saddle them with!

The bitter harvest of user pays is biting us now and all the right have to offer as a solution is more cheap labour!

That’s no longer a solution in a world beset by geopolitical shockwaves, that flow of human capital is now shellshocked and amputated. Supply chain shut down alongside soaring costs will limit travel to the wealthiest.

The Greens mumble about sustainable population rates but are culturally held hostage to migrant rights above all so while less economically chained to using foreign labour to drive down wages, they are identity politics wise bound to open migration.

Increasingly Isolationism becomes a more demanding reality, this is NZ First political territory and if articulated by Winston could have enormous political milage at the ballot box.

  1. Martyn – It would not be so if the newly arrived migrates kept out of Auckland, and Wellington – due to the lack of accommodation, and overcrowded infrastructure…

    • Believe it or not there are still many benefits for new arrivals to settle in Auckland.
Better access to government funded services makes this place attractive.
Example: Private equity owned primary health services clinics receive the same subsidies from government wherever they are located.
Profit seeking businesses locate where demand for services is. Oops….
      Our health model need transformation…
Can we find an odd billion somewhere to reform the heath care system.

    • Can the newly arrived migrants keep out of our public health system too Nathan cause many NZers are already being poorly served and Maori and PI are even worse of.

  2. Auckland peeps can’t complain about traffic. But at the same time dinning out at bbq’s about the increasing value of their mouldy digs.

Opportunity Cost is the economic term for this.

  3. If you need pension soon and free health care, are depressed and can’t run a profitable business, look no further than NZ to migrate to, your elderly parents and siblings are already here. Woke clearly don’t understand Scotland is a lot closer to the UK and more woke than NZ.

Don’t worry NZ, importing poverty here is easy, you just need to have a minimum waged job or study visa, that is below the cost of living, and bring the whole family over!

If you get into trouble, it will be decades of using the NZ housing and health system, before you are asked to leave.

  4. “Increasingly Isolationism becomes a more demanding reality”
Trouble is that isolationism breeds exceptionalism, and often among a load of egotists who’re complete bloody numpties.
The thing that pisses me off most about our simplistic muppett immigration policies is that we see prospective immigrants – based on things like ‘SKILL’ shortages, or how ‘WEALTHY and richie rich’ they are, first and foremost, rather than our own failures. I.e. such as our failure to invest in lil ole Nu Zull that punches above its weight’s indigenous and NuZull born humans required to provide doctoring, nursing, teaching, building, carrying out the shit, bizzniss competencies, et al
And those that we now allow in, in a miserly fashion to relieve OUR short falls and failures, we expect them to NOT have any human ‘qualities’ and affiliations we expect of ourselves.
    Fuck its pathetuk.
Youse doctors, and nurses, and builders, and teachers, and even restauranters (that we don’t even reallt need), can come here, but you better not have the Norman Norman family affiliations we allow ourselves to have. Your wives, brothers, sistas, kuds et al – they are baggage.
It’s pathetic. And I have to say THAT expectation has captured a fair few commenters that come here into this bubble.
I’ve ben telling prospective immigrants since 2016 that there are better places to chance their luck in just as NuZull citizens and residents shuffle their shit offshore in pursuit of a better life (OFTEN until such time as a pandemic hits Mother Erf and they temporarily come scurrying home with their tailings between their leggings)

  5. I am not a Labour voter after several personal issues involving either people now employed by the party or policies directly designed to screw either myself or my workplace over. That being said, opening the floodgates for immigration to higher levels is not fixing the problems. I’m an immigrant myself and am currently looking to switch jobs. A list of problems that are being ignored and not mentioned:

Part-time only positions. No one wants to work? Or maybe it’s more like people actually need full time hours to live.

Ridiculous restrictions. Much like in my home country of the US, people are now asking for senior level experience for entry level positions. No wonder they aren’t getting the people they want.

Outsourced hiring, even in small companies. Talked to someone who did hiring at a workplace I was turned down from almost instantly. They said I would have easily succeeded at their company. Went back and checked, automated weeding software kicked my CV out for whatever reason and they never actually knew I applied.

Pay lies on job sites. I’ve applied for several jobs listed as paying above my minimum demands on job websites that turned out to be paying less. In some cases nearly 8k a year less which is huge at the low end. And 1 company even showed me the listing info they filed with Seek, but Seek decided to bump it up to the next pay scale because they can always say the company lied instead.

Xenophobia. Not exactly the malicious kind, but more a total lack if understanding of foreign qualifications and their value. More than once I’ve been told my degree and half my qualifications are completely useless because they weren’t earned in NZ. Ten years ago an interview was stopped cold and ended because the woman was upset I wouldn’t retrain for an entry level qualification in NZ that I didn’t have. Despite me having many qualifications above that level and working in management roles above that level fir years both abroad and in NZ.

Nobody wants to work is a lie, but employers often seem too blind to what is keeping people from walking in their doors. And pay is only a small amount of it.

    • Xenophobia of any kind is a serious problem.
Unfortunately, it is real and very much alive in our society.
Hope you find a decent job.

Hang in there, NZ is still a better place to live than most other locations on this planet. In spite of, not as a result of, our chosen policies on about everything.

    • Andrew – white immigrants who work, are out of favour, please try to check your privilege. https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PA1812/S00061/govt-has-stats-nz-playing-privilege-bingo.htm

“According to the Government agency’s bingo card, it seems if you are a ‘native English speaker, Cis, white, thin, have no speech impediment, heterosexual, able-bodied, standard accent, have no criminal record, human, tall, mentally healthy, support a mainstream political party, adult, born in your country of residence, wealthy, employed or just not a red-head’, then you are privileged.”

NZ doesn’t want degrees that are real, in the NZ wokeforce they prefer the quickie kind of qualification that you just pay to buy.

      – tips for government work and funding for projects – going trans – your social media struggle with mental illness or getting a criminal record – this is to add to our workplace diversity that the stats people want.

Maybe just gaining weight and becoming obese or having diabetes, or pretending you have a speech impediment and can’t speak English could work, but I don’t think it’s far enough to sway the migration protection woke tribunal .

The problem in NZ, is there are too many privileged people. The woke want the unprivileged to be welcome here too and the rest of NZ to work harder to support all these unprivileged people.

That is why UK rural doctors are not welcome in NZ that look after Maori. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/300368884/doctor-leaves-taki-medical-centre-after-residency-struggles

But transgender, non profitable businesses, and depression are https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/97064735/trans-woman-granted-nz-residency-to-protect-her-from-hate-crime-in-the-uk ,

      https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/chinese-evangelist-granted-refugee-status-by-nz-immigration-tribunal/HFBOUMLTETXLHVEDPHAU3RLUYE/

The reason NZ has mass immigration but no workers is because working is too privileged and the woke want the unemployed, high needs here instead.

NZ policy makers also do a lot of the immigration and economy metrics off the USA, but in the USA they don’t have a social welfare system or free health care, so in the US the migrants have to work – in NZ – migrants don’t have to work, they just need to show lack of privilege and speak the secret woke language.

      • I haven’t openly been shut down for being pale, but did get greeted in one interview 8 years ago with “Oh, we called you in because we thought you were a woman.”

And had my department evaluated by the government (subject to ministry oversight despite being private) as mono-cultural and lacking diversity because we were all male. 5 of us who were born and trained in 5 different countries with very different cultures. But the neighboring department was extremely diverse because it was 5 Maori women who had been born, raised and worked in NZ. 4 of them their entire lives in this same town.

I’m well versed in using skills to avoid and deflect over-woke word salad garbage and nonsense but some you can’t escape

        • The question is why is this happening, why is this allowed to happen? Is it by design or are we merely following a culture established somewhere else.

We know the history of the flower children and many experienced this revolution.

There is a theory, an argument that Marxism is behind this.

These movements are founded on well developed social theory and therefore find fertile ground in the minds of those who opposes capitalism. Despises capitalism.

Have a look around the office and you may well see this and you will also observe that those supporting these ideas are strangely serious beneficiaries of capitalism and depend heavily on the markets.

  6. I doubt Winstone would dare mention it. Everyone knows that Health, Police, prisons etc are in a near state of collapse due to intense staff shortages. I think we should get the skills in asap.

However, we should be looking at Labour and all the things it didnt do over the last troubled 4/7 years. Remember the nursing dropouts of 30% – did they subsidise it or prop it up when they heard about it ? No. Remember Little saying we dont need to train more Drs when Auckland said it could run an extra class at very little cost. And on and on. This has been obvious for years and they have done nothing. I’ve said it before, Nero fiddled while Rome burnt. We are where we are. We cant even get bus drivers and deck hands for pity’s sake.

We centralised Polytechs rather than addressing obvious skills shortages and how did that work out? the same way everything else did – spent a bunch of money and things totally fell apart.

  7. Australia is a disaster at the moment. Search “rent crisis Australia”.
They have reopened the flood gates to international students, and work visas.
Rents are skyrocketing. Vacancies are at record lows. People are lining up around the block to view rentals.
They are projecting 650,000 net immigration over the next 2 years. Total madness. Same happening in Canada.
It’s like the locals can just go get screwed, what big business wants, big business gets. The universities upper echelons are growing and enjoying the big fat salaries, and the extra money to expand woke bs research initiatives.
To hell with the increased demands on housing, rents and dampening the poor peoples wages.
NZ looks like it is heading back down the same road, and reverting to type.
The problem for voters is we know Labour and National are basically as bad as each other in cavorting to business. The Greens are scared of even a hint of being perceived as xenephobic, so say and do nothing, and the migrant union leaders seem only too happy to have ever increasing members.
    Who do you vote for?
NZ first is a sham. NZ had 94900 net immigration in the year to March 2020 under Labour/NZ First and Greens. A record!
The journalists have to get better in election year and demand concrete numbers from all parties. The voting public deserves to know how many each party is going to bring in each year, and what their limit is. No fluff, no let up, demand concrete numbers!
Also where they are going to house them, and how they are going to pay for the infrastructure demands. The annual accommodation assistance bill is now 2.4 billion and growing.

    • We have done exactly that if one looks at the immigration figures.
We continue to regulate workers in terms of their behaviour in response to covid but have no restrictions on travellers entering our borders.
      SMART.
One can rely on government to act logically…….

  8. “Suburban home owners are fine with this mass immigration policy and infrastructure gridlock because it pushes up the untaxed house valuations they have gotten used to gaining year in and year out.”

Yeah But – suburban home owners currently prefer higher wages to pay Adrain’s high mortgage rates and will support low immigration. Martyn and Winston on the same page wanting a high wage economy.

    • You think the desire for higher wages is cyclical?

We NEED a higher wage economy. Wanting it gets one nowhere.
Legislating a higher wage economy is like the foundation of Marxist theory and that was shown to work really well in the Soviet Union and all the other places it was trialled.

    • Why does stats show that we have more doctors per 1000 than ever and our waiting times for services at records levels, all at the same time?
Not difficult to figure that out.
Our productivity is tracking in the wrong direction.
      Why is that.
Simple really. Regulation and government policy.

Can we find a billion or so somewhere so that we can transform our health services. (Water services, policing services, emigration services….)

  9. I am an older immigrant so perhaps am slanted in my thinking but 45 years in the work force often as a boss I would have to agree that there is a core of lazy people here but it is no different in other countries those that move half way round the world are keen to improve their lot so usually are good workers. Australia is in the same situation even with their higher wages

    • Aus/NZ
Only difference is that those we loose to emigration harms us more than what we gain from the average immigrant. Driven by government policy and exacerbated by our “Xenophobia”.

The role of government is to set the social and economic environment where we can thrive.

  10. We always have the Auckland light rail project to fall back on. Everything will be OK.
If Kiwibuild is anything to go by then this project will also not be an existential train wreck.
Just imagine all the fun we can have following the progress of this project planning over the next ten, 20 ….. 30 years.
    The consulting industry will flourish.

  11. Isn’t it strange that the woke spend billions on these dual health reforms to help Maori and PI but somehow they don’t start at the starting gate, aka enough places at medical school in NZ so there are enough Maori and PI doctors for all the Maori and PI patients in the first place.

Auckland Uni calls for more medical student places to help ease doctor shortage
    https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/300614570/auckland-uni-calls-for-more-medical-student-places-to-help-ease-doctor-shortage

Pretty sure they can’t find many Maori and PI health professionals in India, China and the Philippines. Woke have gone off UK doctors as being too white. So they have a separate health system but staffed by people who are not NZer’s generally from the east where standards are not too high (aged nurse care 1 per 100 patents in the Phillipines and used to low wages) and do a two week course in Maori culture?

New Māori Health Authority spending over $1 million a month on consultants and contractors
    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/new-maori-health-authority-spending-over-a-million-dollars-a-month-on-consultants-and-contractors/4EAMSWSAIVHFJIQUFLL26NM4JQ/

I guess not enough money in that for the woke consultants as the small amount of funding for more medical places, goes on the med school doctors themselves and training of Kiwi medical professionals, not the woke management consultants costing over 1 million a month.

Or they could just pay them parity with OZ, because at the mo, many doctors and nurses leave rather than live in poverty in NZ while spending their waking hours on the latest health woke speak such as chest feeding.

They keep adding more untrained jobs into hospitals but it doesn’t really help to have them filled to the brim with staff who are unable to do much for sick patents apart from change a bedpan or be an admin, and just taking up budget.

    • The problem is that our P and M doctors and any other sort are in demand in other parts of the world.
Let’s keep training more of them so that they can go and help out in other jurisdictions where they are valued.
Health care needs to be transformed. Any idea where we can find a few Billion to affect the transformation.

      • That’s why it’s a good idea to not increase Maori and NZ doctor training places (Sarcasm) and make sure that more Kiwis can’t become doctors in NZ, in spite of knowing that many NZ doctors are about to retire and our population has increased 20% many of them very high needs for health care, and we had a pandemic, all while the NZ medical places stayed the same.

I wonder why woke thinks its a better outcome to pay 1 million per month on consultants instead.

Possibly the point of the dual system, is not to help Maori or NZ health but to get more gravy train going for their mates. More signs and virtue signalling and a bit of Te reo is not going to cure cancer patients as much as woke are banking on this.

        • The consultancy expenditure argument is a diversion. It is founded in incompetence not a secret agenda. You give them too much credit. Yet, you are right in that the Woke influencers have captured many who work in our government agencies.

  12. I’m sure the government funded poetry will attract the right applicants to live here.

Just be ok with either being F…ed up or being a perp who likes to F..k others up!

I really think this could be the new recruitment drive for those coming to NZ. I don’t think they are just targeting white men thou to Fu.k up, so that needs work as Indian dairy owners are fair game, or actually anybody with a job or driving a car near their SUVs, needing to be F…ked up.

The word Bitches is a nice touch from Creative NZ/Stuff , we also like to recruit from countries known for their strong histories of family violence so that they can fit in with the enablement of family violence and government funded misogyny here.

    Excerpt from the poem:

    These days

    we’re driving round

    in SUVs

    looking for ya

    or white men like you

    who might be thieves

    or rapists

    or kidnappers

    or murderers

yeah, or any of your descendants

    or any of your incarnations

    cos, you know

    ay, bitch?

    We’re gonna F… YOU UP.

    https://thedailyblog.co.nz/2023/04/14/mediawatch-media-council-right-to-defend-mediocre-poem/

  13. The real reason it’s hard to find good workers in New Zealand is that everyone is just lazy and entitled these days. No one wants to work hard or learn new skills. They all just want to sit around and collect government benefits while complaining about how hard life is. It’s ridiculous! We should just bring in skilled foreigners who are actually willing to work hard and contribute to society. They’ll appreciate the opportunity more than these lazy Kiwis.

    • It does appear to be like that. But that view does not stack up when one looks at employment stats.
Having said that you have a point. Real opportunities to achieve your ambitions are not matched by employment opportunities.

      Where does the problem lie?
      1. Work opportunities?
      2. Ambitions?
      3. Attitude of entitlement?
      4. The list goes on…. It is not a coincidence that we see disdain for capitalism, markets and people looking for a “Green New Deal” … something .. anything to replace capitalism. Marxist ideas inspired many and continue to inspire some.

    • There are a lot more problems than that. I’ve not applied for a couple of jobs that would appear to be a reasonable alternative to my current situation. Why? They offer nothing. Pay is low, stress is high and it is very easy to see that there is exactly zero reward (other than having that job) for long term work, training or dedication. No promotion opportunities, no path for advancement, improvement or developing a career instead of a quick job. You want to motivate people you have to get them engaged. Do some need a boot up the rear? Yes! But the vast overwhelming majority need a different sort of motivation that is extremely lacking in this day and age. They need to employer to give back to the employee in a genuine reciprocal relationship. Something that used to happen in previous decades but keeps getting left behind and ignored in the continual quest for “improvements.”
